                                      LAMENTATIONS

 

                         The faithful love of the LORD never ends! 

                                     His mercies never cease.

                                    Great is his faithfulness;

                            his mercies begin afresh each morning.

                                        Lamentations 3:22-23 

 

            I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely 

        with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow 

        with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

"O LORD, think about this!

    Should you treat your own people this way?

Should mothers eat their own children,

    those they once bounced on their knees?

Should priests and prophets be killed

    within the Lord's Temple?

See them lying in the streets--

    young and old,

boys and girls,

    killed by the swords of the enemy.

You have killed them in your anger,

    slaughtering them without mercy.

You have invited terrors from all around, 

    as though you were calling them to a day of feasting.

In the day of the LORD's anger,

    no one has escaped or survived.

The enemy has killed all the children

    whom I carried and raised."

I have heard the many rumors about me,

    and I am surrounded by terror.

My enemies conspire against me,

" 'Outside, the sword will bring death,

    and inside, terror will strike

both young men and young women,

2 Chronicles 36:17  

So the LORD brought the king of Babylon against them. The Babylonians killed Judah's young men, even chasing after them into the Temple. They had no pity on the people, killing both young men and young women, the old and the infirm. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar.

He gave his people over to be butchered by the sword,

    because he was so angry with his own people--his special possession.

Their young men were killed by fire;

To whom can I give warning?

    Who will listen when I speak?

Their ears are closed,

    and they cannot hear.

They scorn the word of the LORD.

Lamentations 3:43  

"You have engulfed us with your anger, chased us down,

    and slaughtered us without mercy."  (see Lamentations 3:43-45)

Zechariah 11:6  

"Likewise, I will no longer have pity on the people of the land," says the LORD. "I will let them fall into each other's hands and into the hands of their king. They will turn the land into a wilderness, and I will not rescue them."

    are ungodly, wicked men.

I have seen their despicable acts

    right here in my own Temple,"

Lamentations 1:14  

"I begged my allies for help, 

    but they betrayed me.

My priests and leaders

    starved to death in the city,

even as they searched for food

    to save their lives." 

Lamentations 4:13  

Yet it happened because of the sins of her prophets

    and the sins of her priests,

who defiled the city

    He has fulfilled the promises of disaster

    he made long ago.

He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy.

    He has caused her enemies to gloat over her

    and has given them power over her.

Cry aloud before the Lord,

    O walls of beautiful Jerusalem!

Let your tears flow like a river

    day and night.

Give yourselves no rest;

    give your eyes no relief.

Rise during the night and cry out.

    Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord.

Lift up your hands to him in prayer,

    pleading for your children,

for in every street

    they faint with hunger. 

 

Cry aloud before the Lord, O walls of beautiful Jerusalem! Let your tears flow like a river day and night. Give yourselves no rest; give your eyes no relief. 

Psalm 119:145-146  

I pray with all my heart; answer me, LORD!

    I will obey your decrees.

I cry out to you; rescue me,

    that I may obey your laws.  (see Psalm 119:145-152)

Jeremiah 9:1  

If only my head were a pool of water

    and my eyes a fountain of tears,

I would weep day and night

The LORD was determined

My heart is breaking

    as I remember how it used to be:

Isaiah 26:9  

In the night I search for you;

    in the morning I earnestly seek you.

For only when you come to judge the earth

    They scoff and insult beautiful Jerusalem, saying,

"Is this the city called 'Most Beautiful in all the World' 

    and 'Joy of all the Earth'?"

All your enemies mock you.

    They scoff and snarl and say,

"We have destroyed her at last!

    We have long waited for this day,

    and it is finally here!"

 

All who pass by jeer at you. They scoff and insult beautiful Jerusalem, 

Deuteronomy 28:37  

"You will become an object of horror, ridicule and mockery among all the nations to which the LORD sends you."  (see Deuteronomy 28:15-68) 

Job 27:23  

"But everyone jeers at them

    and mocks them."  (see all Job 27)

    a monument to their stupidity.

What can I say about you?

    Who has ever seen such sorrow?

O daughter of Jerusalem,

    to what can I compare your anguish?

O virgin daughter of Zion,

    how can I comfort you?

For your wound is as deep as the sea.

    Who can heal you?

Your prophets have said

    so many foolish things, false to the core.

They did not save you from exile

    by pointing out your sins.

Instead they painted false pictures,

    filling you with false hope.

Jeremiah 23:25-27 

    "I have heard these prophets say, 'Listen to the dream I had from God last night.' And then they proceed to tell lies in my name. How long will this go on? If they are prophets, they are prophets of deceit, inventing everything they say. By telling these false dreams, they are trying to get my people to forget me, just as their ancestors did by worshiping the idols of Baal."

Jeremiah 23:30-32  

    "Therefore," says the LORD, "I am against these prophets who steal messages from each other and claim they are from me. I am against these smooth-tongued prophets who say, 'This prophecy is from the LORD!' I am against these false prophets. Their imaginary dreams are flagrant lies that lead my people into sin. Jeremiah 28:15-17  

    Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah, "Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but the people believe your lies. Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'You must die. Your life will end this very year because you have rebelled against the LORD.' "

    This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies, the God of Israel says: "Do not let your prophets and fortune-tellers who are with you in the land of Babylon trick you. "Son of man, prophesy against the false prophets of Israel who are inventing their own prophecies. Say to them, 'Listen to the word of the LORD. This is what the Sovereign LORD says: What sorrow awaits the false prophets who are following their own imaginations and have seen nothing at all!' "
