Psalm 136:7-9

Give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights--
    His faithful love endures forever.
the sun to rule the day,
    His faithful love endures forever.
and the moon and stars to rule the night.
    His faithful love endures forever.

Give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights-- His faithful love endures forever.
Genesis 1:14-18
Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened. God made two great lights--the larger one to govern the day and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
Deuteronomy 4:19
"And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars--all the forces of heaven--don't be seduced into worshiping them. The LORD your God gave them to all peoples of the earth."
Psalm 8:3-4
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers--
the moon and stars you set in place--
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?  (see all Psalm 8)
Psalm 33:6
The LORD merely spoke,
    and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word,
and all the stars were born.  (see all Psalm 33)
Isaiah 40:26
"Look up into the heavens.
    Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
    calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable strength,
not a single one is missing.  (see all Isaiah 40)
James 1:17-18
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all his creation, became his prized possession.  (see all James 1)

Psalm 136:4-6 Part 2 of 2

Give thanks to him who alone does mighty miracles.
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who made the heavens so skillfully.
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who placed the earth among the waters.
    His faithful love endures forever.

Give thanks to him who made the heavens so skillfully. His faithful love endures forever.
Genesis 1:9-10
Then God said, "Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear." And that is what happened. God called the dry ground "land" and the waters "seas." And God saw that it was good.
(see Genesis 1:9-13)
Psalm 24:1-2
The earth is the LORD's and everything in it.
The world and all its people belong to him.
For he laid the earth's foundation on the seas
and built it on the ocean depths.  (see all Psalm 24)
Isaiah 42:5
God, the LORD, created the heavens and stretched them out.
He created the earth and everything in it.
He gives breath to everyone,
life to everyone who walks the earth. ...  (see Isaiah 42:1-9)
Isaiah 44:24
This is what the LORD says--
    your Redeemer and Creator:
"I am the LORD, who made all things.
I alone stretched out the heavens.
Who was with me
when I made the earth?"  (see Isaiah 44:21-28)
Jeremiah 33:1-3
While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard the LORD gave him this second message: "This is what the LORD says--the LORD who made the earth, who formed and established it, whose name is the LORD: Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come."  (see all Jeremiah 33)
2 Peter 3:5-7
They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.  (see all 2 Peter 3)

Genesis 1:6-8
Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth." And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called the space "sky."

Jeremiah 51:15-16
The LORD made the earth by his power,
and he preserves it by his wisdom.
With his own understanding
    he stretched out the heavens.
When he speaks in the thunder

He causes the clouds to rise over the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain
and releases the wind from his storehouses.  (see Jeremiah 51:15-19)

Psalm 136:1-3 Part 3

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the LORD of lords.
    His faithful love endures forever.

Give thanks to the LORD of lords. His faithful love endures forever.
1 Timothy 6:13-16
And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now on until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. For,
At just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed
and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. He alone
can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach
him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power
to him forever! Amen.  (see all 1 Timothy 6)
2 Chronicles 20:18-21
Then King Jehoshaphat bowed low with his face to the ground. And all the people of Judah and Jerusalem did the same, worshiping the LORD. Then the Levites from the clans of Kohath and Korah stood to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud shout.
Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said, "Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed."
After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the LORD and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang:
    "Give thanks to the LORD;
his faithful love endures forever!"  (see all 2 Chronicles 20)
Ezra 3:10-13
When the builders completed the foundation of the LORD's Temple, the priests put on their robes and took their places to blow their trumpets. And the Levites, descendants of Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the LORD, just as King David had prescribed. With praise and thanks, they sang this song to the LORD:
    "He is so good!
His faithful love for Israel endures forever!"
Then all the people gave a great shout, praising the LORD because the foundation of the LORD's Temple had been laid.
But many of the older priests, Levites, and other leaders who had seen the first Temple wept aloud when they saw the new Temple's foundation. The others, however, were shouting for joy. The joyful shouting and weeping mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the distance.

Psalm 136:1-3 Part 2 of 3

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
    His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to the LORD of lords.
    His faithful love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of gods. His faithful love endures forever.

2 Chronicles 5:11-14
Then the priests left the Holy Place. All the priests who were present had purified themselves, whether or not they were on duty that day. And the Levites who were musicians--Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and all their sons and brothers--were dressed in fine linen robes and stood at the east side of the altar playing cymbals, lyres and harps. They were joined by 120 priests who were playing trumpets. The trumpeters and singers performed together in unison to praise and give thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments, they raised their voices and praised the LORD with these words:
     "He is good!
            His faithful love endures forever!"
At that moment a thick cloud filled the Temple of the LORD. The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the LORD filled the Temple of God.  (see all 2 Chronicles 5)
2 Chronicles 7:1-3
When Solomon finished praying, fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the burnt offerings and sacrifices, and the glorious presence of the LORD filled the Temple. The priests could not enter the Temple of the LORD because the glorious presence of the LORD filled it. When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the LORD filling the Temple, they fell down on the ground and worshiped and praised the LORD, saying,
    "He is good!
His faithful love endures forever!"  (see all 2 Chronicles 7)

The joyful voices of bridegrooms and brides will be heard again, along with the joyous songs of people bringing thanksgiving offerings to the LORD. They will sing,

Psalm 135:15-18 Part 3 of 3

The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold,
    shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak,
    and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear,
    and mouths but cannot breathe.
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.

And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.
Psalm 115:8
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.
Isaiah 44:18-20
Such stupidity and ignorance!
Their eyes are closed and they cannot see.
Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.
The person who made the idol never stops to reflect,
"Why, it's just a block of wood!
I burned half of it for heat
and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat.
How can the rest of it be a God?
Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?"
The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes.
He trusts something that can't help him at all.
Yet he cannot bring himself to ask,
"Is this idol that I'm holding in my hand a lie?"  (see Isaiah 44:6-20)
Jeremiah 10:14-16
The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge!
The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make,
for their carefully shaped works are a fraud.
These idols have no breath or power.
Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies!
On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed.
But the God of Israel is no idol!
He is the creator of everything that exists,
including Israel, his own special possession.
The LORD of Heaven's Armies is his name!  (see all Jeremiah 10)
Habakkuk 2:18-20
"What good is an idol carved by man,
or a cast image that deceives you?
How foolish to trust in your own creation--
a god that can't even talk!
What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols,
    'Wake up and save us!'
To speechless stone images you say,
    'Rise up and teach us!'
Can an idol tell you what to do?
They may be overlaid with gold and silver,
    but they are lifeless inside.
But the LORD is in his holy Temple.
Let all the earth be silent before him."  (see all Habakkuk)

Psalm 135:15-18 Part 2 of 3

The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold,
    shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak,
    and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear,
    and mouths but cannot breathe.
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.

They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see.
Psalm 115:5
They have mouths but cannot speak,
    and eyes but cannot see.
Isaiah 41:28-29
"Not one of your idols told you this.
Not one gave any answer when I asked."
See, they are all foolish, worthless things.
All your idols are as empty as the wind.  (see all Isaiah 41)
Isaiah 44:16-17
He burns part of the tree to roast his meat
    and to keep himself warm.
He says, "Ah, that fire feels good."
Then he takes what's left
and makes his god: a carved idol!
He falls down in front of it,
    worshiping and praying to it.
"Rescue me!" he says.
"You are my god!"  (see Isaiah 44:6-20)
Isaiah 45:20
"Gather together and come,
    you fugitives from surrounding nations.
What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols
and pray to gods that cannot save!  (see Isaiah 45:14-25)

They have ears but cannot hear, and mouths but cannot breathe.
Psalm 115:6-7
They have ears but cannot hear,
    and noses but cannot smell.
They have hands but cannot feel,
    and feet but cannot walk,
and throats but cannot make a sound.
1 Corinthians 12:1-2
Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don't want you to misunderstand this. You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.  (see all 1 Corinthians 12)

Psalm 135:15-18 Part 1 of 3

The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold,
    shaped by human hands.
They have mouths but cannot speak,
    and eyes but cannot see.
They have ears but cannot hear,
    and mouths but cannot breathe.
And those who make idols are just like them,
as are all who trust in them.

The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands.
Psalm 115:4
Their idols are merely things of silver and gold,
    shaped by human hands.
Psalm 96:5
The gods of other nations are mere idols,
but the LORD made the heavens!  (see all Psalm 96)
Revelation 9:20-21
But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood--idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts.  (see Revelation 9:13-22)
Isaiah 2:8
Their land is full of idols;
the people worship things they have made
with their own hands.  (see Isaiah 2:5-22)
Isaiah 37:19
"And they have thrown down the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But of course the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all--only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands.
(see all Isaiah 37)
Isaiah 40:18-20
To whom can you compare God?
What image can you find to resemble him?
Can he be compared to an idol formed in a mold,
overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains?
Or if people are too poor for that,
they might at least choose wood that won't decay
and a skilled craftsman
to carve an image that won't fall down!  (see Isaiah 40:12-31)
Jeremiah 1:15-16
"Listen! I am calling the armies of the kingdoms of the north to come to Jerusalem. I, the LORD, have spoken!"
    "They will set their thrones
at the gates of the city.
    They will attack its walls
and all the other towns of Judah.
    I will pronounce judgment
on all my people for all their evil--
for deserting me and burning incense to other gods.
Yes, they worship idols made with their own hands!"

Psalm 135:13-14

Your name, O LORD, endures forever;
your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation.
For the LORD will give justice to his people
and have compassion on his servants.

Your name, O LORD, endures forever; your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation.
Exodus 3:13-15
But Moses protested, "If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?"
God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. Say to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you." God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.
    This is my eternal name,
my name to remember for all generations."  (see all Exodus 3)

But you, O LORD, will sit on your throne forever.
Your fame will endure to every generation.  (see all Psalm 102)

For the LORD will give justice to his people and have compassion on his servants.

and no one is left, slave or free."  (see all Deuteronomy 32)

"As that old proverb says, 'From evil people come evil deeds.' So you can be sure I will never harm you. (see Matthew 7:16-20) Who is the king of Israel trying to catch anyway? Should he spend his time chasing one who is as worthless as a dead dog or a single flea? May the LORD therefore judge which of us is right and punish the guilty one. He is my advocate, and he will rescue me from your power!"  (see all 1 Samuel 24)
Psalm 106:44-46
Even so, he pitied them in their distress
    and listened to their cries.
He remembered his covenant with them
and relented because of his unfailing love.
He even caused their captors
to treat them with kindness.  (see all Psalm 106)
Hebrews 10:30-31
For we know the one who said,
    "I will take revenge.
        I will pay them back."
He also said,
"The LORD will judge his own people."
It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
(see all Hebrews 10)

Psalm 135:8-12 Part 3 of 3

He destroyed the firstborn in each Egyptian home,
    both people and animals.
He performed miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt
against Pharaoh and all his people.
He struck down great nations
    and slaughtered mighty kings--
Sihon king of the Amorites,
    Og king of Bashan,
and all the kings of Canaan.
He gave their land as an inheritance,
a special possession to his people Israel.

He gave their land as an inheritance, a special possession to his people Israel.
Psalm 44:1-3
O God, we heard it with our own ears--
    our ancestors have told us
of all you did in their day,
    in days long ago.
You drove out the pagan nations by your power
and gave all the land to our ancestors.
You crushed their enemies
    and set our ancestors free.
They did not conquer the land with their swords;
it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory.
It was your right hand and strong arm
and the blinding light from your face that helped them,
for you loved them.  (see all Psalm 44)
Psalm 78:55
He drove out nations before them;
he gave them their inheritance by lot.
He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.
Psalm 136:17-22
Give thanks to him who struck down mighty kings.
    His faithful love endures forever.
He killed powerful kings--
    His faithful love endures forever.
Sihon king of the Amorites,
    His faithful love endures forever.
and Og king of Bashan.
    His faithful love endures forever.
God gave the land of these kings as an inheritance--
    His faithful love endures forever.
a special possession to his servant Israel.
His faithful love endures forever.  (see all Psalm 136)
