Luke 10:29-37 Part 3 of 6

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied with a story: "A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant (a Levite) walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, 'Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.' Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?" Jesus asked. The man replied, "The one who showed him mercy." Then Jesus said, "Yes, now go and do the same."

Leviticus 21:1-3  The LORD said to Moses, "Give the following instructions to the priests, the descendants of Aaron. A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by touching the dead body of a relative. The only exceptions are his closest relatives--his mother or father, son or daughter, brother, or his virgin sister who depends on him because she has no husband."

Numbers 8:16  "Of all the people of Israel, the Levites are reserved for me. I have claimed them for myself in place of all the firstborn sons of the Israelites; I have taken the Levites as their substitutes." (see Numbers 3)

Numbers 8:18-19  "Yes, I have claimed the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel. And of all the Israelites, I have assigned the Levites to Aaron and his sons. They will serve in the Tabernacle on behalf of the Israelites and make sacrifices to purify the people so no plague will strike them when they approach the sanctuary."

Deuteronomy 34:1-3  Then Moses went up to Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab and climbed Pisgah Peak, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him the whole land, from Gilead as far as Dan; all the land of Naphtali; the land of Ephraim and Manasseh; all the land of Judah, extending to the Mediterranean Sea; the Negev; the Jordan Valley with Jericho--the city of palms--as far as Zoar.

Mark 10:46  Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road. [see verses 46-52; also Luke 18:35-43, Matthew 20:29-34]

Luke 19:1-2  Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region. [see verses 1-10]

Leviticus 19:18  "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD."

Psalm 15:1-3  Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter your presence on  your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. (see also verses 4-5)

Proverbs 3:29  Don't plot harm against your neighbor, for those who live nearby trust you.

Proverbs 24:28  Don't testify against your neighbors without cause; don't lie about them.

Luke 10:25-28 Part 2 of 2

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?" The man answered, " 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "  "Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!"

The man answered, " 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' "

Deuteronomy 6:5  "And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength."

Matthew 22:37-38  Jesus replied, " 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment."

Mark 12:29-30  Jesus replied, "The most important commandment is this: 'Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' "

"Right! Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!" 

Galatians 3:10-12  But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law." (Deuteronomy 27:26) So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." (Habakkuk 2:4) This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life." (Leviticus 18:5)

Romans 10:8-9  In fact, it (faith) says, "The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart." (Deuteronomy 30:12-14)  And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (see verses 10-13)

Matthew 22:34-36  But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: "Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses:"

Luke 11:53-54  As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

Luke 20:20  Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus. 

John 8:6  They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.

"Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" 

Matthew 19:16  Someone came to Jesus with this question: "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" (see also Mark 10:17)

Luke 18:18  Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: "Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" 

Acts 16:29-30  The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way. My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, "Blessed are the eyes that have seen what you have seen. I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn't see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it."

"No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

John 1:18  No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.

John 17:25-26  "O righteous Father, the world doesn't know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them."

"Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen." 

Matthew 13:16  "Blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears because they hear."

Hebrews 11:13  All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth.

1 Peter 1:10-12  This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ's suffering and his great glory afterward. They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even angels are eagerly watching these things happen.

Psalm 8:2  You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.

Matthew 21:15-16  The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, "Praise God for the Son of David." But the leaders were indignant. They asked Jesus, "Do you hear what these children are saying?"  "Yes," Jesus replied. "Haven't you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, 'You have taught children and infants to give you praise.' "

Luke 12:32  "So don't be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom."

Daniel 7:13-14  As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal--it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.

John 3:35  The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands.
