Luke 18:31-34 Part 1 of 2

Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said, "Listen, we're going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true. He will be handed over to the Romans, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon. They will flog him with a whip and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again." But they didn't understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about.

Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said, "Listen, we're going up to Jerusalem,"

Matthew 20:17 As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately and told them what was going to happen to him.

Mark 10:32 They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him.

Luke 9:51 As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

Luke 13:22 Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem.

Luke 17:11 As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria.

Luke 19:28 After telling this story (see verses 11-27), Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.

"where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true."

Matthew 1:22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord's message through his prophet: "Look! The virgin will conceive a child! she will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God with us.' " (see verses 18-21, Isaiah 7:14)

Matthew 26:24 "For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him! It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!"

Matthew 26:31 On the way, Jesus told them, "Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, 'God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' (Zechariah 13:7)"

Matthew 26:53-54 "Don't you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?" (see verses 31-56)

Luke 18:28-30 Part 2 of 2

Peter said, "We've left our homes to follow you." "Yes," Jesus replied, "and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come."

Job 42:10-13 When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD gave him twice as much as before! Then all his brothers, sisters, and former friends came and feasted with him in his home. And they consoled him and comforted him because of all the trials the LORD had brought against him. And each of them brought a gift of money and a gold ring. So the LORD blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning. For now he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 teams of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. He also gave Job seven more sons and three more daughters. (compare with Job 1:1-3)

Mark 10:30a "... will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and property--along with persecution."

Matthew 19:28 Jesus replied, "I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

Matthew 19:29b "... will inherit eternal life."

Mark 10:30b "And in the world to come that person will have eternal life."

John 10:27-30 "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father's hand. The Father and I are one."

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Luke 18:28-30 Part 1 of 2

Peter said, "We've left our homes to follow you."

Matthew 4:19-20 Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!" And they left their nets at once and followed him. (see Mark 1:16-18, Luke 5:8-11)

Matthew 4:21-22 A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind. (See Mark 1:19-20)

Matthew 9:9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting at his tax collector's booth. "Follow me and be my disciple," Jesus said to him. so Matthew got up and followed him. (See Mark 2:13-14, Luke 5:27-28)

Matthew 10:37-38 "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine."

Luke 14:26-27 "If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison--your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple."

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross and follow me." (see also Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23)

Matthew 19:27 Then Peter said to him, "We've given up everything to follow you. What will we get?" (see Mark 10:28)

Luke 18:24-27 Part 2 of 2

When Jesus saw this, he said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God! In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!" Those who heard this said, "Then who in the world can be saved?" He replied, "What is impossible for people is possible with God."

Matthew 19:23-24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I'll say it again--it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!"

Luke 6:24 "What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now."

Those who heard this said, "Then who in the world can be saved?" He replied, "What is impossible for people is possible with God."

Matthew 19:25-26 The disciples were astounded. "Then who in the world can be saved?" they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible."

Luke 18:24-27 Part 1 of 2

When Jesus saw this, he said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!"

Psalm 49:16-20 So don't be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day. People who boast of their wealth don't understand; they will die just like animals.

Proverbs 11:28 Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.

Proverbs 28:6 Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich.

Matthew 13:22 "The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced." (see verses 1-23)

1 Timothy 6:17-19 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

Luke 18:22-23 Part 2 of 2

When Jesus heard his answer, he said, "There is still one thing you haven't done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was very rich.

"Then come, follow me."

Matthew 4:19 Jesus called out to them (Simon/Peter and Andrew), "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!" (see verses 18-22)

Matthew 8:22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead." (see verses 18-22)

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." (see verses 21-28)

Luke 9:23 Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me." (see verses 21-27)

John 21:19 Jesus said this to him (Peter) to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, "Follow me." (see chapter 21)

1 Peter 2:21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. (see verses 18-25)

They say to each other, 'Come on, let's go hear the prophet tell us what the LORD is saying!' So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don't act on it! But when all these terrible things happen to them--as they certainly will--then they will know a prophet has been among them." (see chapter 33)

Luke 18:22-23 Part 1 of 2

When Jesus heard his answer, he said, "There is still one thing you haven't done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor,"

Acts 2:45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. (see verses 42-47)

Acts 4:34-35 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. (see verses 32-37)

Luke 16:9 "Here's the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home."

Luke 19:8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, "I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!"

Matthew 5:19-20 "Don't store up treasure here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal."

Luke 12:33 "Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it."
