Luke 22:63-65

The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking him and beating him. They blindfolded him and said, "Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?" And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at him.

 

Matthew 16:21  From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.

Mark 10:33-34  "Listen," he said, "we're going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans. They will mock him, spit on  him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again." (see also Luke 9:22)

Luke 17:25  "But first the Son of Man must suffer terribly and be rejected by this generation."

Matthew 26:67-68  Then they began to spit in Jesus' face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him, jeering, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?" (see also Mark 14:65)

John 18:22-23  Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded. Jesus replied, "If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?" (see verses 19-24)

Isaiah 50:6  I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.

Luke 22:61-62

At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord's words flashed through Peter's mind: "Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me." And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

 

Luke 22:34  But Jesus said, "Peter let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me." 

Matthew 26:75  Suddenly, Jesus' words flashed through Peter's mind: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me." And he went away, weeping bitterly.

Mark 14:72b  Suddenly, Jesus' words flashed through Peter's mind: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me." And he broke down and wept.

John 21:15-17  (After Jesus' resurrection) After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"  "Yes, Lord," Peter replied, "you know I love you."  "Then feed my lambs," Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question: "Simon son of John, do you love me?"  "Yes, Lord," Peter said, "you know I love you."   "Then take care of my sheep," Jesus said. A third time he asked him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus said, "Then feed my sheep."

Acts 3:12-15  Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. "People of Israel, he said, "what is so surprising about this? (see verses 1-11) And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--the God of all our ancestors--who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, despite Pilate's decision to release him. You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact!"

Luke 22:58-60

After a while someone else looked at him and said, "You must be one of them!"  "No, man, I'm not!" Peter retorted. About an hour later someone else insisted, "This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too." But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

Matthew 26:71-72  Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. "I don't even know the man," he said.

Mark 14:69-70a  When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, "This man is definitely one of them!" But Peter denied it again.

John 18:25  Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, "You're not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "No, I am not."

 

About an hour later someone else insisted, "This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too."  

Matthew 26:73  A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, "You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent."

Mark 14:70b  A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, "You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean."

John 18:26  But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?" Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

 

But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 

Matthew 26:74  Peter swore, "A curse on me if I'm lying--I don't know the man!" And immediately the rooster crowed.

Mark 14:71-72a  Peter swore, "A curse on me if I'm lying--I don't know this man you're talking about!" And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. (see verses 30, 68)

John 18:27  Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

Luke 22:54-57

So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's home. And Peter followed at a distance. The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, "This man was one of Jesus' followers!" But Peter denied it. "Woman," he said, "I don't even know him!"

 

So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's home.

Matthew 26:57  Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and the elders had gathered. (see also Mark 14:53)

John 18:12-14  So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up. First they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time. Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, "It's better that one man should die for the people."

 

And Peter followed at a distance. 

Matthew 26:58a  Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priest's courtyard. (see also Mark 14:54a)

 

The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. 

Matthew 26:58b  He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end. (see also Mark 14:54b)

John 18:15-16  Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus. Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching the gate, and she let Peter in.

 

A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, "This man was one of Jesus' followers!" 

John 18:17  The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?"  "No," he said, "I am not."

Matthew 26:69  Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, "You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean." (see also Mark 14:66-67)

 

But Peter denied it. "Woman," he said, "I don't even know him!" 

Matthew 26:70  But Peter denied it in front of everyone. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. (see also John 18:18, 25)

Mark 14:68  But Peter denied it. "I don't know what you're talking about." he said, and went out into the entryway. Just then a rooster crowed. (see verse 30)

Luke 22:49-53

When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, "Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!" And one of them struck at the high priest's slave, slashing off his right ear. But Jesus said, "No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him. Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him. "Am I some dangerous revolutionary," he asked, "that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns."

 

When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, "Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!"

Luke 22:38  "Look, Lord," they replied, "we have two swords among us."  "That's enough." he said.

 

And one of them struck at the high priest's slave, slashing off his right ear. 

John 18:10  Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's slave. (see also Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:47)

 

But Jesus said, "No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him. 

John 18:11  But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?"

Matthew 26:52-53  "Put away your sword," Jesus told him. "Those who use the sword will die by the sword. Don't you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?"

 

Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him. "Am I some dangerous revolutionary," he asked, "that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?" 

Mark 14:48  Jesus asked them, "Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you have come with swords to arrest me?" (see also Matthew 26:55a)

 

"Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day." 

Mark 14:49a  "Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day." (see also Matthew 26:55b)

 

"But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns." 

Mark 14:49b-52  "But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me." Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away. One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him, he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked. (see also Matthew 26:54, 56)

Luke 22:47-48

But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss. But Jesus said, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

Mark 14:43  And immediately, even as Jesus said this [see verses 41-42], Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.

John 18:3  The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

Mark 14:44  The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: "You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard." [see also Matthew 26:14-16, 48, Mark 14:10-11, Luke 22:3-6, John 13:2, 26-27]

 

Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss. But Jesus said, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" 

Matthew 26:49-50  As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. "Rabbi!" he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss. Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

Mark 14:45-46  As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. "Rabbi!" he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss. Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested  him.

John 18:4-6  Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" he asked. "Jesus the Nazarene," they replied. "I AM he," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) As Jesus said, " I AM he," they all drew back and fell to the ground!

Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation."

Matthew 4:11  Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. (see also Mark 1:12-13)

Hebrews 1:14  Therefore, angels are only servants--spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. (see verse 13)

Hebrews 2:16-18  We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. (see all chapter 2)

Hebrews 4:14-16  So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same things we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13  If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
