Lamentations 2:5-6 Part 1 of 2

 

                                        LAMENTATIONS

                         The faithful love of the LORD never ends! 

                                     His mercies never cease.

                                    Great is his faithfulness;

                            his mercies begin afresh each morning.

                                        Lamentations 3:22-23 

 

            I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely 

        with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow 

        with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Yes, the Lord has vanquished Israel

    like an enemy.

He has destroyed her palaces

    and demolished her fortresses.

He has brought unending sorrow and tears

    upon beautiful Jerusalem.

He has broken down his Temple

    as though it was merely a garden shelter.

The LORD has blotted out all memory

    of the holy festivals and Sabbath days.

Kings and priests fall together

    before his fierce anger. 

  

Yes, the Lord has vanquished Israel like an enemy.

Job 13:24

"Why to you turn away from me?

    Why do you treat me as your enemy?"  (see all Job 13)

Job 16:9  

"God hates me and angrily tears me apart.

    He snaps his teeth at me

    and pierces me with his eyes."  (see all Job 16)

Job 19:11  

"His fury burns against me,

    he counts me as an enemy."  (see all Job 19)

Job 33:10  

" 'God is picking a quarrel with me,

    he considers me his enemy.' "  (see all Job 33)

 

He has destroyed her palaces and demolished her fortresses. 

Lamentations 2:2  

Without mercy the Lord has destroyed

    every home in Israel.

In his anger he has broken down 

    the fortress walls of beautiful Jerusalem.

He has brought them to the ground,

    dishonoring the kingdom and its rulers.

 

He has brought unending sorrow and tears upon beautiful Jerusalem. 

Isaiah 3:26  

The gates of Zion will weep and mourn.

    The city will be like a ravaged woman,

    huddled on the ground.  (see all Isaiah 3)

Isaiah 29:2  

"Yet I will bring disaster upon you,

    and there will be much weeping and sorrow.

For Jerusalem will become what her name Ariel means--

    an altar covered in blood."  (see all Isaiah 29)

Jeremiah 7:20  

    So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "I will pour out my terrible fury on this place. Its people, animals, trees, and crops will be consumed by the unquenchable fire of my anger."  (see Jeremiah 7:16-29)

Jeremiah 9:17-19  

This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies says:

"Consider all this, and call for the mourners.

    Send for the women who mourn at funerals.

Quick! Begin your weeping!

    Let the tears flow from your eyes.

Hear the people of Jerusalem crying in despair,

    'We are ruined! We are completely humiliated!

We must leave our land,

    because our homes have been torn down.' "  (see all Jeremiah 9)

Jeremiah 42:18  

    "This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies, the God of Israel says: 'Just as my anger and fury have been poured out on the people of Jerusalem, so they will be poured out on you, when you enter Egypt. You will be an object of damnation, horror, cursing, and mockery. And you will never see your homeland again.' "  (see all Jeremiah 42-43)

All the strength of Israel

    vanishes beneath his fierce anger.

The Lord has withdrawn his protection

    as the enemy attacks.

He consumes the whole land of Israel

    like a raging fire.

He bends his bow against his people,

    as though he were their enemy.

His strength is used against them

    to kill their finest youth.

His fury is poured out like fire

    on beautiful Jerusalem.  

  

All the strength of Israel vanishes beneath his fierce anger.

Deuteronomy 29:28  

" 'In great anger and fury the LORD uprooted his people from their land and banished them to another land, where they still live today!' "

2 Kings 22:13  

"Go to the Temple and speak to the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah. Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found. For the LORD's great anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll. We have not been doing everything it says we must do."  (see 2 Kings 22:18-20, also 2 Chronicles 34:14-28)

 

The Lord has withdrawn his protection as the enemy attacks.  

Psalm 74:11  

Why do you hold back your strong right hand?

    Unleash your powerful fist and destroy them.  (see all Psalm 74) 

He consumes the whole land of Israel like a raging fire. 

Isaiah 42:25  

Therefore, he poured out his fury on them

    and destroyed them in battle.

They were enveloped in flames,

    but they still refused to understand.

They were consumed by fire,

    but they did not learn their lesson.  (see Isaiah 42:18-25)

Jeremiah 21:4-5  

" 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: I will make your weapons useless against the king of Babylon and the Babylonians who are outside your walls attacking you. In fact, I will bring your enemies right into the heart of this city. I myself will fight against you with a strong hand and a powerful arm, for I am very angry. You have made me furious!' "  (see all Jeremiah 21)

 

He bends his bow against his people, as though he were their enemy. 

Lamentations 3:12-13  

He has drawn his bow

    and made me the target for his arrows.

He shot his arrows

    deep into my heart.  (see Lamentations 3:1-18)

 

His strength is used against them to kill their finest youth. 

Ezekiel 20:34  

"And in anger I will reach out with my strong right hand and powerful arm, and I will bring you back from the lands where you are scattered.

Ezekiel 24:25  

    Then the LORD said to me, "Son of man, on the day I take away their stronghold--their joy and glory, their heart's desire, their dearest treasure--I will also take away their sons and daughters."  (see all Ezekiel 24)

 

His fury is poured out like fire on beautiful Jerusalem. 

Jeremiah 4:20  

Waves of destruction roll over the land,

    until it lies in complete desolation.

Suddenly my tents are destroyed;

    in a moment my shelters are crushed.  (see all Jeremiah 4)

Jeremiah 7:20

The Lord in his anger 

    has cast a dark shadow over beautiful Jerusalem.

The fairest of Israel's cities lies in the dust,

    thrown down from the heights of heaven.

In his day of great anger,

    the Lord has shown no mercy even to his Temple.

Without mercy the Lord has destroyed 

    every home in Israel.

In his anger he has broken down

    the fortress walls of beautiful Jerusalem.

He has brought them to the ground,

    dishonoring the kingdom and its rulers. 

  

The Lord in his anger has cast a dark shadow over beautiful Jerusalem.

Lamentations 3:44

"You have hidden yourself in a cloud

    so our prayers cannot reach you."

 

The fairest of Israel's cities lies in the dust, thrown down from the heights of heaven. 

Isaiah 64:10-11  

Your holy cities are destroyed.

    Zion is a wilderness;

    yes, Jerusalem is a desolate ruin.

The holy and beautiful Temple

    where our ancestors praised you

has been burned down,

    and all the things of beauty are destroyed.

 

In his day of great anger, the Lord has shown no mercy even to his Temple. 

Jeremiah 12:7  

"I have abandoned my people, my special possession.

    I have surrendered my dearest ones to their enemies."

Jeremiah 52:13  

He burned down the Temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem. He destroyed all the important buildings in the city.

Without mercy the Lord has destroyed every home in Israel. 

Lamentations 3:43  

"You have engulfed us with your anger, chased us down,

    and slaughtered us without mercy." 

Lamentations 2:17  

But it is the LORD who did just as he planned.

    He has fulfilled the promises of disaster

    he made long ago.

He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy.

    He has caused her enemies to gloat over her

    and has given them power over her.

 

In his anger he has broken down the fortress walls of beautiful Jerusalem. 

Psalm 89:40  

You have broken down the walls protecting him

    and ruined every fort protecting him.  (see Psalm 89:38-45)

Micah 5:11  

"I will tear down your walls 

    and demolish your defenses."  (see Micah 5:10-15)

 

He has brought them to the ground, dishonoring the kingdom and its rulers. 

Isaiah 2:12  

For the LORD of Heaven's Armies 

    has a day of reckoning.

He will punish the proud and mighty

    and bring down everything that is exalted.  (see Isaiah 2:5-17)

2 Kings 25:9  

He burned down the Temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem. He destroyed all the important buildings in the city.  

(see 2 Kings 25:8-12)

2 Chronicles 36:19  

Then his army burned the Temple of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, burned all the palaces, and completely destroyed everything of value.

    My heart is broken

and my soul despairs,

    for I have rebelled against you.

In the streets the sword kills,

    and at home there is only death.

Others heard my groans,

    but no one turned to comfort me.

When my enemies heard about my troubles,

    they were happy to see what you had done.

Oh, bring the day you promised,

    when they will suffer as I have suffered.

Look at all their evil deeds, LORD.

    Punish them,

as you have punished me

    for all my sins.

My groans are many,

    and I am sick at heart." 

 

"Oh, bring the day you promised, when they will suffer as I have suffered."

Isaiah 47:11

"So disaster will overtake you (Babylon),

    and you won't be able to charm it away.

Calamity will fall upon you,

    and you won't be able to buy your way out.

A catastrophe will strike you suddenly,

Jeremiah 30:16  

"But all who devour you will be devoured,

    and all your enemies will be sent into exile.

What sorrow awaits you who say,

"The day is near when I, the LORD,

As you have done to Israel,

O God, declare them guilty.

Drive them away because of their many sins,

Give them the punishment they so richly deserve!      

    Measure it out in proportion to their wickedness.

Pay them back for all their evil deeds!

    Give them a taste of what they have done to others.  (see all Psalm 28)

Psalm 56:7  

Don't let them get away with their wickedness,

    in your anger, O God, bring them down.  (see all Psalm 56)

Psalm 55:23  

But you, O God, will send the wicked

    down to the pit of destruction.

Murderers and liars will die young,

Jerusalem reached out for help

    but no one comforts her.

Regarding his people Israel,

    the LORD has said,

"Let their neighbors be their enemies!

    Let them be thrown away like filthy rags!"

"The LORD is right," Jerusalem says,

    "for I rebelled against him.

Listen people everywhere;

    look upon my anguish and despair,

for my sons and daughters

    have been taken captive to distant lands.

I begged my allies for help,

    but they betrayed me.

My priests and leaders

    starved to death in the city,

even as they searched for food

    to save their lives." 

 

"Listen, people everywhere; look upon my anguish and despair, for my sons and daughters have been taken captive to distant lands."

Deuteronomy 28:32

"You will watch as your sons and daughters are taken away as slaves. Your heart will break for them, but you won't be able to help them."

Deuteronomy 28:41  

"You will have sons and daughters, but you will lose them, for they will be led away into captivity."  (see Deuteronomy 28:15-68)

Lamentations 1:12  

"Does this mean nothing to you, all you who pass by?

    Look around and see if there is any suffering like mine,

which the LORD brought on me

Among all her lovers,

    there is no one left to comfort her.

All her friends have betrayed her

    and become her enemies.

"O LORD, think about this!

    Should you treat your own people this way?

Should mothers eat their own children,

    those they once bounced on their knees?

Should priests and prophets be killed

    within the LORD's Temple?"  (see Lamentations 2:13-22)
