Luke 11:17-20 Part 2 of 2

He knew their thoughts so he said, "Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A family splintered by feuding will fall apart. You say I am empowered by Satan. But if Satan is divided and fighting against himself, how can his kingdom survive? And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. But if I am casting out demons by the power of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you."

Acts 19:13-16  A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, "I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!" Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, "I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?" Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered. (see also verses 17-20)

Matthew 8:16  That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick.

Luke 4:36  Amazed, the people exclaimed, "What authority and power this man's words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!"

"But if I am casting out demons by the power of God," 

Exodus 8:19  "This is the finger of God!" the magicians exclaimed to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh's heart remained hard. He wouldn't listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. (see chapters 7-12)

Luke 17:20-21  One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, "When will the Kingdom of God come?" Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God can't be detected by visible signs. You won't be able to say, 'Here it is!' or 'It's over there!' For the Kingdom of God is already among you."

Luke 21:31  "In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near." (see verses 5-36)

Acts 1:3  During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

Matthew 9:4  Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, "Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?" (see verses 1-8)

Psalm 94:11  The LORD knows people's thoughts; he knows they are worthless!

Luke 6:8  But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come and stand in front of everyone." So the man came forward. (see verses 6-11)

Luke 9:47  But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side. (see verses 46-48)

John 2:24-25  But Jesus didn't trust them (vs 23), because he knew human nature. No one needed to tell him what mankind is really like.

Luke 11:14-16

One day Jesus cast out a demon from a man who couldn't speak, and when the demon was gone, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed, but some of them said, "No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons." Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

One day Jesus cast out a demon from a man who couldn't speak, and when the demon was gone, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed,

Matthew 9:32-33  When they left, a demon-possessed man who couldn't speak was brought to Jesus. So Jesus cast out the demon, and then the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed. "Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel!" they exclaimed.

but some of them said, No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons."   

Matthew 9:34  But the Pharisees said, "He can cast out demons because he is empowered by the prince of demons."

Matthew 10:25  "Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I (Jesus), the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!"

Matthew 12:24  But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, "No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons."

Mark 3:22  But the teachers of religious law who had arrived from Jerusalem said, "He's possessed by Satan, the prince of demons. That's where he gets the power to cast out demons."

Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. 

Matthew 12:38  One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority."

Matthew 16:1  One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Mark 8:11  When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

John 2:18  But the Jewish leaders demanded, "What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it." (see verses 13-22)

John 6:29-30  Jesus told them, "This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent." They answered, "Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?"

You say to him, 'A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.' And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, 'Don't bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can't help you.' But I tell you this--though he won't do it for friendship's sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You fathers--if your children ask for a fish, to you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him."

Genesis 6:5-6  The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on earth. It broke his heart.

Luke 18:1-6  One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. "There was a judge in a certain city," he said, "who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, 'Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.' The judge ignored her for awhile, but finally he said to himself, 'I don't fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I'm going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!" Then the Lord said, "Learn a lesson from this unjust judge." (see verses 7-8)

Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me." But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her."

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

John 11:1  A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters Mary and Martha.

John 12:2  A dinner was prepared in Jesus' honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.

Luke 19:6  Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.

Her sister Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. 

Luke 8:35  People rushed out to see what had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus' feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.

John 12:3  Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus' feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me." 

Mark 4:38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?"

But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!" 

Matthew 6:25  "That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life--whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing?" (see verses 25-34, also Luke 12:22-31)

Luke 8:14  "The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity."

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied with a story: "A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant (a Levite) walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. 1 Samuel 24:5-6  But then David's conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul's robe. "The LORD knows I shouldn't have done that to my lord the king," he said to his men. 2 Kings 17:24  The king of Assyria transported groups of people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim and resettled them in the towns of Samaria, replacing the people of Israel. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.

Psalm 15:1-3  Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter your presence on  your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?" The man answered, " 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "  "Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!"

The man answered, " 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' "

Deuteronomy 6:5  "And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength."

(Deuteronomy 27:26) So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." (Habakkuk 2:4) This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life." (Leviticus 18:5)

Romans 10:8-9  In fact, it (faith) says, "The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart." (Deuteronomy 30:12-14)  And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Luke 11:53-54  As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

Luke 20:20  Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus. 

John 8:6  They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.

"Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" 

Matthew 19:16  Someone came to Jesus with this question: "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" (see also Mark 10:17)

Luke 18:18  Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: "Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?" 

Acts 16:29-30  The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, "Blessed are the eyes that have seen what you have seen. I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn't see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it."

John 1:18  No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.

1 Peter 1:10-12  This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ's suffering and his great glory afterward. They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even angels are eagerly watching these things happen.
