Luke 20:17-19 Part 1 of 3

Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what does this Scripture mean? 'The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.' Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on." The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them--they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people's reaction.

Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what does this Scripture mean? 'The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.' "

Psalm 118:22-23  The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing and it is wonderful to see.

Isaiah 28:16  Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken." (see verses 11-19)

Zechariah 10:4  "From Judah will come the cornerstone, the tent peg, the bow for battle, and all the rulers." (see all chapter 10)

Matthew 21:42  Then Jesus asked them, "Didn't you ever read this in the Scriptures? 'The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing, and it is wonderful to see.' "

Acts 4:11  "For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, 'The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.' " (see verses 1-22)

Ephesians 2:20  Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. (see verses 11-22)

1 Peter 2:6-7  As the Scriptures say, "I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced." (Isaiah 28:16) Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, "The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone." (Psalm 118:22), (see verses 4-12)

" 'What will I do?' the owner asked himself. 'I know! I'll send my cherished son. Surely they will respect him.' But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they said to each other, 'Here comes the heir to this estate. Let's kill him and get the estate for ourselves!' So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him. What do  you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?" Jesus asked. "I'll tell you--he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others."  "How terrible that such a thing should ever happen," his listeners protested.

"So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him."

Mark 12:8  "So they grabbed him and murdered him and threw his body out of the vineyard." (see also Matthew 21:39)

Luke 19:47  After that (verses 45-46), he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him.

Luke 20:19  The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them--they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people's reaction.

Hebrews 13:12  So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood.

 

"What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?" Jesus asked. 

Matthew 21:40  "When the owner of the vineyard returns," Jesus asked, "what do you think he will do to those farmers?" (see also Mark 12:9a)

 

"I'll tell you--he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others."  "How terrible that such a thing should ever happen," his listeners protested. 

Matthew 21:41  The religious leaders replied, "He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest." (see also Mark 12:9b)

Luke 19:27  " 'And as for these enemies of mine who didn't want me to be their king--bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.' " (see verses 11-27)

Matthew 8:11-12  "And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world--from east and west--and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. But many Israelites--those for whom the Kingdom was prepared--will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (see verses 5-13)

Acts 13:46-47  Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared, "It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles. For the Lord gave us this command when he said, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.' Matthew 21:38  "But when the tenant farmers saw his son coming, they said to one another, 'Here comes the heir to this estate. Come on, let's kill him and get the estate for ourselves!' " (see also Mark 12:7)

Hebrews 1:1-2  Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

John 1:10-12  He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (see verses 1-18)

Romans 8:17  And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. (see verses 9-17)

1 Kings 21:13-16  Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him (Naboth). And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying, "He cursed God and the king." So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death. The town leaders then sent word to Jezebel, "Naboth has been stoned to death." When Jezebel heard the news, she said to Ahab, "You know the vineyard Naboth wouldn't sell you? Well, you can have it now! He's dead!" So Ahab immediately went down to the vineyard of Naboth to claim it. Matthew 3:16-17  After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy." (see Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:22-23)

Matthew 17:5  But even as he (Peter) spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him." (see verses 1-9, also Mark 9:2-10, Luke 9:28-36)

2 Peter 1:16-19  For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy." We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place--until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.

1 Peter 1:9-12  The reward for trusting him (Jesus Christ) will be the salvation of your souls. This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ's suffering and his great glory afterward. They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.

Now Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for several years. At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers attacked the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty-handed. So the owner sent another servant, but they also insulted him, beat him up, and sent him away empty-handed. A third man was sent, and they wounded him and chased him away."

"So the owner sent another servant, but they also insulted him, beat him up, and sent him away empty-handed."

Mark 12:4  "The owner then sent another servant, but they insulted him and beat him over the head."

Matthew 22:5-6  "But the guests he had invited (see verses 3-4) ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business. Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them." (see verses 1-14)

 

"A third man was sent, and they wounded him and chased him away." 

Matthew 21:36  "So the landowner sent a larger group of his servants to collect for him, but the results were the same."

Mark 12:5  "The next servant he sent was killed. Others he sent were either beaten or killed,..."

Jeremiah 27:15  They were furious with Jeremiah and had him flogged and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary. Jonathan's house had been converted into a prison. 

Jeremiah 38:6  So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it. (see chapters 37:1-40:6)

Acts 5:38-41  "So my (Gamaliel's, an expert in religious law) advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!" The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go. The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. (see verses 17-42)

Matthew 21:33  "Now listen to another story. A certain land owner planted a vineyard, built a wall around it, dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenant farmers and moved to another country." (see also Mark 12:1)

Song of Songs 8:11-12  Solomon has a vineyard at Baal-hamon, which he leases out to tenant farmers. Each of them pays a thousand pieces of silver for harvesting its fruit. But my vineyard is mine to give, and Solomon need not pay a thousand pieces of silver. But I will give two hundred pieces of silver to those who care for its vines.

Isaiah 5:1-2  Now I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill. He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with the best vines. In the middle he built a watchtower and carved a winepress in the nearby rocks. Then he waited for a harvest of sweet grapes, but the grapes that grew were bitter. (see verses 1-7) 

Psalm 80:8-9  You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us, and we took root and filled the land. (see all Psalm 80)

But if we say it was merely human, the people will stone us because they are convinced John was a prophet." So they finally replied that they didn't know. And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things."

Luke 7:29  When they heard this (see verses 24-28), all the people--even the tax collectors--agreed that God's way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

 

So they finally replied that they didn't know. And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things."
