Luke 20:5-8

They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe John. But if we say it was merely human, the people will stone us because they are convinced John was a prophet." So they finally replied that they didn't know. And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things."

Luke 7:30  But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God's plan for them, for they had refused John's baptism.
Mark 11:31  They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe John." (see also Matthew 21:25b)
Matthew 21:32  "For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn't believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins." (see verses 28-32)

Matthew 11:9  "Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet." (see verses 7-15)
Matthew 14:5  Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.
Matthew 21:26  "But if we say it was merely human, we'll be mobbed because the people believe John was a prophet." 
Mark 11:32  "But do we dare say it was merely human?" For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet.
Luke 1:76  "And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord." (see verses 67-80)
Luke 7:29  When they heard this (see verses 24-28), all the people--even the tax collectors--agreed that God's way was right, for they had been baptized by John.
 
So they finally replied that they didn't know. And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things." 
Matthew 21:27  So they finally replied, "We don't know." And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things." (see also Mark 11:33)
