He
saw through their trickery and said, "Show me a Roman coin. Whose
picture and title are stamped on it?" "Caesar's," they replied. "Well
then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God
what belongs to God." So they failed to trap him by what he said in
front of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they
became silent.
"Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God."
Matthew 22:21b "Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." (see also Mark 12:17)
Luke 23:1-2 Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. They began to state their case: "This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king."
Romans 13:6-7 Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. (see verses 1-5) For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.
Romans 12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. (see all chapter 12)
So they failed to trap him by what he said in front of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they became silent.
Matthew 22:22 His reply amazed them, and they went away.
Luke 11:31-32 "The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here--but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here--but you refuse to repent." (see verses 29-32)
Luke 14:4, 6 When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away. ... Again they could not answer. (see verses 1-6)
