The Work of the Holy Spirit - Part 3

God gives his Holy Spirit to all who accept Jesus as Savior.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20  Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.  (see 1 Corinthians 6:12-20)
Galatians 3:2-5  Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?
I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.  (see all Galatians 3)
Ephesians 1:13-14  And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.  (see all Ephesians 1)

The Holy Spirit gives Christians power over sin.

Romans 8:1-4  So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin's control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.  (see all Romans 8)

The Holy Spirit gives Christians power to live a fruitful life.

Galatians 5:22-23  But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!  (see Galatians 5:13-26)

The Holy Spirit gives Christians power for ministry.

1 Corinthians 12:11  It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
(see all 1 Corinthians 12)

The Work of the Holy Spirit - Part 2

The importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4  On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.  [see all acts 2]
Acts 4:8-9  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them "Rulers and elders of our people, are we being questioned today because we've done a good deed for a crippled man?" Do you want to know how he was healed?"  [see Acts 4:1-22]
Acts 7:55-56  But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God's right hand. And he told them, "Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God's right hand!"
[see all Acts 7]
Acts 13:9-10  Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. Then he said, "You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the LORD?"  [see Acts 13:4-12]

The Holy Spirit affirms believers' salvation.

1 Corinthians 6:11  Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.  [see all 1 Corinthians 6]
2 Thessalonians 2:13  As for us, we can't help but thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation--a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth.  [see all 2 Thessalonians 2]

The Holy Spirit affirms believers identity as children of God.

Romans 8:9  But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)  [see Romans 8:1-13]
Romans 8:14-15  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God's Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, "Abba, Father."  [see Romans 8:14-30]

The Work of the Holy Spirit - Part 1

The Holy Spirit is teacher and revealer of God's thoughts and ways.

John 14:16-17  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you."  (see John 14:1-21)
John 14:26  "But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative--that is, the Holy Spirit--he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you."  (see John 14:22-31)
John 15:26  "But I will send you the Advocate--the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me."  (see all John 15)
John 16:13-15  "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, 'The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.' "  (see all John 16)
1 John 2:20  But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, and all of you know the truth.  (see 1 John 2:1-23)
1 John 2:26-27  I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don't need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true--it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.
(see 1 John 2:24-29)

The Holy Spirit gives guidance and power for evangelism.

Acts 1:8  "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere--in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
(see Acts 1:1-8)
Acts 4:31  After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
(see Acts 4:23-31)
Acts 8:29-31  The Holy Spirit said to Philip, "Go over and walk alongside the carriage."
Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"
The man replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me?" And he urged Philip to come up onto the carriage and sit with him.  (see all Acts 8)
