Luke 20:27-33 Part 1 of 2

Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees--religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question: "Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother's name. Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children. So the second brother married the widow, but he also died. Then the third brother married her. This continued with all seven of them, who died without children. Finally, the woman also died. So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her!"

Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees

Matthew 16:1  One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Matthew 16:11-12  "Why can't you understand that I'm not talking about bread? (see verses 5-10) So again I say, 'Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.' " Then at last they understood that he wasn't speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Acts 4:1-2  While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees. These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.

Acts 23:6-8  Paul realized that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!" This divided the council--the Pharisees against the Sadducees--for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these. Luke 20:23-26 Part 2 of 2

He saw through their trickery and said, "Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped on it?"  "Caesar's," they replied. "Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." So they failed to trap him by what he said in front of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they became silent.

"Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God."

Matthew 22:21b  "Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." (see also Mark 12:17)

Luke 23:1-2  Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. They began to state their case: "This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king."

Romans 13:6-7  Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. (see verses 1-5) For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

Romans 12:1  And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. (see all chapter 12)

Luke 11:31-32  "The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here--but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus. "Teacher," they said, "we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You teach the way of God truthfully. Now tell us--is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

John 3:1-2  There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. "Rabbi," he said, "we know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you."

Acts 10:34-36  Then Peter replied, "I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel--that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all." (see verses 1-48)

Matthew 22:17  "Now tell us what you think about this: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" (see also Mark 12:14b-15a)

Matthew 17:24-27  On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, "Doesn't your teacher pay the Temple tax?"  "Yes, he does," Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, "What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered?"  "They tax the people they have conquered," Peter replied. "Well, then," Jesus said, "The citizens are free! However, we don't want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us."

Matthew 22:16a  They [the Pharisees] sent some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to meet with him.

Mark 3:2  Since it was a Sabbath, Jesus' enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.

Luke 14:1  One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely.

1 Kings 14:5-6  But the LORD had told Ahijah, "Jeroboam's wife will come here, pretending to be someone else. She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick. Give her the answer I give you." So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he called out, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else?" Then he told her, "I have some bad news for you." Matthew 22:15  Then the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested. [see also Mark 12:13]

Matthew 12:9-10  Then Jesus went over to their synagogue, where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus, "Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?" (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.) [see verses 9-14, see also Mark 3:1-6]

Luke 11:53-54  As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him. [see verses 37-54]

Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what does this Scripture mean? 'The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.' Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on." Luke 5:17  One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (it seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord's healing power was strongly with Jesus. [see verses 17-26]

Luke 5:30  But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus' disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with such scum?" [see verses 27-32]

Luke 9:22  "The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things," he said. "He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead." [see verses 18-27] 

Luke 19:47-48  After that [see verses 45-46], he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him. But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said.

 

But they were afraid of the people's reaction.

That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though not by human hands, that crushed to pieces the statue of iron, bronze, clay, silver and gold. The great God was showing the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its meaning is certain." 

Luke 2:34  Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby's mother, "This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him." (see verses 21-35)

Romans 9:31-33  But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path. God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said, "I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced. (Isaiah 8:14, 28:16)" (see all chapter 9)

1 Peter 2:8  And, "He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall." (Isaiah 8:14) They stumble because they do not obey God's word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. (see verses 4-12)
