When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife, Elizabeth, was also from the priestly line of Aaron. Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord's commandments and regulations. They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old.

Matthew 2:1-2 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him."

1 Chronicles 24:10 The seventh lot fell to Hakkoz. The eighth lot fell to Abijah.
1 Chronicles 24:1-3, 19 This is how Aaron's descendants, the priests, were divided into groups for service. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and they had no sons. So only Eleazar and Ithamar were left to carry on as priests. With the help of Zadok, who was a descendant of Eleazar, and of Ahimalech, who was a descendant of Ithamar, David divided Aaron's descendants into groups according to their various duties. .... Each group carried out its appointed duties in the house of the LORD according to the procedures established by their ancestor Aaron in obedience to the command of the LORD, the God of Israel.
Luke 2:8 One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on duty that week.
