James 1:12

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.

Genesis 22:1-2  Some time later, God tested Abraham's faith. "Abraham!" God called. "Yes," he replied. "Here I am."  "Take your son--Yes, Isaac, whom you love so much--and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you." (see verses 1-19)
James 5:11  We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.
1 Peter 3:14  And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen (see verses 8-13), make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.

Revelation 3:10-11  "Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown." (see verses 7-13)

that God has promised to those who love him.
Exodus 20:6  "But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands." (see verses 1-21)

James 1:9-11 Part 2 of 2

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all their achievements.

And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field.
Job 14:1-2  "How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble! We blossom like a flower then wither. Like a passing shadow, we quickly disappear." (see all chapter 14)
Psalm 103:15-16  Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows and we are gone--as though we had never been here. (see all Psalm 103)
1 Peter 1:24-25  As the Scriptures say, "People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever." And that word is the Good News that was preached to you. (see verses 13-25)

The hot sun rises
Matthew 20:12  " 'Those people worked only one hour, and yet you've paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.' " (see verses 1-16)

and the grass withers;
Psalm 102:4  My heart is sick, withered like grass, and I have lost my appetite.
Psalm 102:11  My life passes as swiftly as the evening shadows. I am withering away like grass. (see all Psalm 102)

the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all their achievements.
Isaiah 40:6-8  A voice said, "Shout!" I asked, "What should I shout?"  "Shout that people are like grass. Their beauty fades as quickly as the flowers in a field. The grass withers and the flowers fade beneath the breath of the LORD. And so it is with people. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever." (see all chapter 40)

James 1:9-11 Part 1 of 2

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all their achievements.

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them.
Matthew 23:12  "But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
1 Samuel 2:8  "He (the LORD) lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the LORD's, and he has set the world in order." (see verses 1-10, Hannah's Prayer of Praise)
Psalm 18:27  You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud.
Proverbs 3:34  The LORD mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble.
Isaiah 57:15  The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: "I live in a high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts."
Ezekiel 21:26  "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Take off your jeweled crown, for the old order changes. Now the lowly will be exalted, and the mighty will be brought down." (see verses 18-27)
Luke 1:52  "He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble." (see verses 46-55, the Magnificat: Mary's Song of Praise)

James 1:5-8 Part 2 of 2

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
Matthew 21:21-22  Then Jesus told them, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don't doubt, you can do things like this (see verses 18-20) and much more. You can even say to this mountain, 'May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and it will happen. You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it." (see also Matthew 17:14-21)
Luke 17:5-6  The apostles said to the Lord, "Show us how to increase our faith." The Lord answered, "If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea' and it would obey you!"
Mark 11:23-24  "I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, 'May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you've received it, it will be yours." (see verses 20-25)

Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
Psalm 119:113  I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions. (see verses 113-120)
James 4:8  Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and world. (see verses 1-10)
2 Peter 3:15-16  And remember, our Lord's patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him--speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction. (see all chapter 3)

Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
1 Kings 3:10-12  The LORD was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, "Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies--I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!" (see verses 5-15)
Proverbs 2:3-6  Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (see chapters 1-4)
Daniel 2:20-23  He (Daniel) said, "Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light. I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given me wisdom and strength. You have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded." (see all chapter 3)

James 1:2-4 Part 2 of 2

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

For you know that when your faith is tested,
1 Peter 1:7  These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold--though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. (see verses 7-12)

your endurance has a chance to grow.
Romans 5:3  We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know they help us develop endurance. (see verses 1-16)
Hebrews 10:35-36  So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. (see verses 32-39)
Hebrews 12:1  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith (see all chapter 11), let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. (see verses 1-12)
James 5:11  We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy. (see verses 7-12)

So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
Ephesians 4:13  This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. (see verses 11-16)
Colossians 4:12  Epaphras, a member of your own fellowship and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings. He always prays earnestly for you, asking God to make you strong and perfect, fully confident that you are following the whole will of God.
Hebrews 5:14  Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. (see verses 11-14)
Hebrews 6:1-3  So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don't need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. You don't need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.

James 1:2-4 Part 1 of 2

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.
Matthew 5:11-12  "God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way." (see verses 1-12)
Acts 5:41  The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. (see verses 17-41)
Philippians 2:17  But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. (see verses 12-18)
1 Thessalonians 1:6  So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. (see all chapter 1)
Hebrews 10:34  You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever. (see verses 32-39)
1 Peter 1:6  So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. (see verses 1-6)
1 Peter 4:12-13  Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad--for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. (see all chapter 4)

James 1:1

This letter is from James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to the "twelve tribes"--Jewish believers scattered abroad. Greetings!

This letter is from James,
Acts 15:13  When they had finished (see verses 4-12), James stood and said, "Brothers, listen to me." (see verses 13-21)
Acts 12:16-17  Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking. When they finally opened the door and saw him, they were amazed. He motioned for them to quiet down and told them how the Lord had led him out of prison. "Tell James and the other brothers what happened," he said. And then he went to another place. (see verses 1-19)
Acts 21:18  The next day Paul went with us to meet with James, and all the elders of the Jerusalem church were present. (see verses 15-25)
1 Corinthians 15:7  Then he (Jesus) was seen by James and later by all the apostles. (see verses 1-11)
Galatians 1:18-19  Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. The only other apostle I met at that time was James, the Lord's brother. (see verses 11-24)
Galatians 2:9  In fact, James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church, recognized the gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their co-workers. They encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles, while they continued their work with the Jews. (see verses 1-10)
Galatians 2:12  When he (Peter) first arrived, he ate with the Gentile Christians, who were not circumcised. But afterward, when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn't eat with the Gentiles anymore. He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted on the necessity of circumcision. (see verses 11-21)

a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 1:1  This letter is from Paul, a slave of Jesus Christ, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his good news.
Titus 1:1  This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives.

I am writing to the "twelve tribes"--Jewish believers
Acts 26:7  "In fact, that is why the twelve tribes of Israel zealously worship God night and day, and they share the same hope I have. Yet, Your Majesty, they accuse me for having this hope!" (see all chapter 26)

scattered abroad.
1 Peter 1:1  This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God's chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. (see also John 7:33-36)

Greetings!
Acts 15:23  This is the letter they took with them: "This letter is from the apostles and elders, your brothers in Jerusalem. It is written to the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. Greetings!" (see all chapter 15)

Habakkuk 3:16-17

I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us. Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, ...

I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror.
Job4:14  "Fear gripped me, and my bones trembled." [see all chapter 4]

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren;
Joel 1:10-12  The fields are ruined, the land is stripped bare. The grain is destroyed, the grapes have shriveled, and the olive oil is gone. Despair, all you farmers! Wail, all you vine growers! Weep, because the wheat and barley--all the crops of the field--are ruined. The grapevines have dried up, the fig trees have withered. The pomegranate trees, palm trees, and apple trees--all the fruit trees--have dried up. And the people's joy has dried up with them. [see all of Joel]

Habakkuk 3:14-15

With his own weapons, you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking Israel would be easy prey. You trampled the sea with your horses, and the mighty waters piled high.

With his own weapons, you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking Israel would be easy prey.
Judges 7:22  When the 300 Isrealites blew their ram's horns, the LORD caused the warriors in the camp to fight against each other with their swords. Those who were not killed fled to places as far away as Beth-shittah near Zererah and to the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath. (see all chapter 7)

Isaiah 9:19-21  The land will be blackened by the fury of the LORD of Heaven's Armies. The people will be fuel for the fire, and no one will spare even his own brother. They will attack their neighbor on the right but will still be hungry. They will devour their neighbor on the left but will not be satisfied. In the end they will even eat their own children. Habakkuk 3:10-11 Part 2 of 2

The mountains watched and trembled. Onward swept the raging waters. The mighty deep cried out, lifting its hands to the LORD. The sun and moon stood still in the sky as your brilliant arrows flew and your glittering spear flashed.

Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. Was it in anger, LORD, that you struck the rivers and parted the sea? Were you displeased with them?

But as soon as the feet of the Priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river's edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho. (see all chapter 3)

The Spirit of the LORD speaks through me; his words are upon my tongue. The God of Israel spoke. The Rock of Israel said to me: 'The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is like the light of morning at sunrise, like a morning without clouds, like the gleaming of the sun on new grass after rain.'
