Luke 8:22-25 Part 3 of 4

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?" The disciples were terrified and amazed. "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!"

The disciples were terrified and amazed.
Mark 1:27  Amazement gripped the audience and they began to discuss what had happened. "What sort of new teaching is this?" they asked excitedly. "It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!"
Mark 4:41  The disciples were absolutely terrified. "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "Even the wind and waves obey him!"
Luke 5:8-10  When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, "Oh, Lord, please leave me--I'm too much of a sinner to be around you." For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, "Don't be afraid! From now on you'll be fishing for people!"
Matthew 7:28  When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, ...
Matthew 14:26  When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, "It's a ghost!"
Matthew 17:5-6  But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him." The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.
Matthew 27:54  The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, "This man truly was the Son of God!"
John 14:27  "I am leaving you with a gift--peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid."

Luke 8:22-25 Part 2 of 4

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!"

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm.
Matthew 8:26b  Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.
Mark 4:39  When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
Psalm 65:7  You quieted the raging oceans with their pounding waves and silenced the shoutings of the nations.
Psalm 107:29  He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.
Matthew 14:32  When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
Mark 6:51a  Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped.

Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?"
Matthew 8:26a  Jesus responded, "Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!"
Mark 4:40  Then he asked them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
Matthew 14:31  Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him (Peter). "You have so little faith," Jesus said, "Why did you doubt me?"
Matthew 6:30  "And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?"
Matthew 17:20  "You don't have enough faith," Jesus told them. "I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible."
Mark 16:14  Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

Luke 8:22-25 Part 1 of 4

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out.
Matthew 8:23  Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.
Mark 4:35-36  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).

As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
Matthew 8:24  Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
Mark 4:37-38a  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.
Mark 6:47-48  Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.

The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"
Matthew 8:25  The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
Mark 4:38b  The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?"
Matthew 14:29-30  "Yes, come," Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted.

Luke 8:19-21 Part 2 of 2

Then Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn't get to him because of the crowd. Someone told Jesus, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to see you." Jesus replied, "My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God's word and obey it."

Jesus replied, "My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God's word and obey it."
Luke 6:46-49  "So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say? I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins."
Luke 11:28  Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice."
John 14:21  "Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them."
James 1:22-25  But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Luke 8:19-21 Part 1 of 2

Then Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn't get to him because of the crowd. Someone told Jesus, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to see you." Jesus replied, "My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God's word and obey it."

Then Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn't get to him because of the crowd.
Matthew 13:55-56  Then they scoffed, "He's just the carpenter's son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers--James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. All his sisters live right here among us. Where did he learn all these things?" (see also Mark 6:3)
John 2:12  After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.
John 7:2-5  But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters, and Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! You can't become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!" For even his brothers didn't believe in him.
John 7:10  But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view.
Acts 1:14  They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
1 Corinthians 9:4-6  Don't we have the right to live in your homes and share your meals? Don't we have the right to bring a Christian wife with us as the other apostles and the Lord's brothers do, and as Peter does? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have to work to support ourselves?
Galatians 1:19  The only other apostle I met at that time was James, the Lord's brother.

Luke 8:16-18

"No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them."

"No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed."
Matthew 5:15a  "No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket."
Mark 4:21a  Then Jesus asked them, "Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not!"
Luke 11:33a  "No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a basket."

"A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house."
Matthew 5:15b  "Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house."
Mark 4:21b  "A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine."
Luke 11:33b  "Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house."

"For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all."
Matthew 10:26  "But don't be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all." (see also Luke 12:2)
1 Timothy 5:24-25  Remember, the sins of some people are obvious, leading them to certain judgment. But there are others whose sins will not be revealed until later. In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light.

"So pay attention to how you hear."
Mark 4:23-24  "Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. "Then he added, "Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given--and you will receive even more."

"To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them."
Matthew 13:12  "To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them."
Matthew 25:29  "To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away."
Mark 4:25  "To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away."

Luke 8:11-15 Part 5 of 5

"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God's word. The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved. The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don't have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow to maturity. And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God's word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.

"And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God's word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.
Matthew 13:23  "The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God's word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!"
Mark 4:20  "And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God's word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!"
John 15:5-6  "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned."
Philippians 1:11  May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation--the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ--for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
Colossians 1:6  This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God's wonderful grace.
Hebrews 10:32-34  Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ. Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering. Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others who were suffering the same things. You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever.
James 5:7  Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.

"The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow to maturity."
Matthew 6:24  "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
Matthew 13:22  "The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced."
Matthew 19:23-24  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I'll say it again--it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!"
Mark 4:18-19  "The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced."
1 Timothy 6:9-10  But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
James 1:11  The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

Luke 8:11-15 Part 3 of 5

"But since they don't have deep roots, they believe for a while,"
Matthew 13:21a  "But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long." (also Mark 4:17a)
Galatians 1:6-7  I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.
Galatians 5:7-8  You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth? It certainly isn't God, for he is the one who called you to freedom.

"then they fall away when they face temptation."
Matthew 13:21b  "They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God's word." (also Mark 4:17b)
Matthew 11:6  "And tell him (John the Baptist), 'God blesses those who do not turn away because of me (Jesus).' "
1 Timothy 4:1-2  Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.
Hebrews 3:12-13  Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still "today," so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God's word."
Mark 4:14  "The farmer plants seed by taking God's word to others."
Luke 5:1  One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.
Luke 11:28  Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice."
Acts 4:31  After this prayer (see verses 23-30), the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
1 Thessalonians 2:13  Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn't think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God--which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.
1 Peter 1:23  For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.
1 John 2:14  I have written to you who are God's children because you know the Father. I have written to you who are mature in the faith because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning. I have written to you who are young in the faith because you are strong. God's word lives in your hearts, and you have won your battle with the evil one.
Revelation 1:1-2  This is a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants the events that must soon take place. He sent an angel to present this revelation to his servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 1:9  I, John, am your brother and your partner in suffering and in God's kingdom and in the patient endurance to which Jesus calls us. I was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the word of God and for my testimony about Jesus.

Luke 8:9-10 Part 2 of 2

His disciples asked him what this parable meant. He replied, "You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they look, they won't really see. When they hear, they won't understand.' "

"But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they look, they won't really see. When they hear, they won't understand.' "
Isaiah 6:8-10  Then I heard the LORD asking, "Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?" I said, "Here I am. Send me." And he said, "Yes, go, and say to this people, 'Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.' Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing."
Matthew 13:13-17  "That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don't really see. They hear, but they don't really listen or understand. This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says, 'When you hear what I say,  you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend. For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes--so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but they didn't see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it."
Mark 4:10-14  Later, when Jesus was alone with the twelve disciples and with the others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables meant. He replied, "You are permitted to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders, so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise they will turn to me and be forgiven.' " Then Jesus said to them, "If you can't understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables?"

Luke 8:9-10 Part 1 of 2

His disciples asked him what this parable meant. He replied, "You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they look, they won't really see. When they hear, they won't understand.' "

Matthew 11:25-26  At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!"
Matthew 16:16-17  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being."

This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time. But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made to all Gentiles everywhere, so that they too might believe and obey him. All glory to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, forever. Amen.
1 Corinthians 2:10  But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets. (see verses 11-16)
1 John 2:20  But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, and all of you know the truth.
1 John 2:27  But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don't need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true--it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

Luke 8:4-8 Part 3 of 3

One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him: "A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants. Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!" When he had said this, he called out, "Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand."

"Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!"

John 15:5-8  "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father."

"Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants."

Luke 7:44-47 Part 2 of 2

Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn't offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. I tell you, her sins--and they are many--have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love."

"You didn't greet me with a kiss,"

Luke 7:40-43

Then Jesus answered his thoughts. "Simon," he said to the Pharisee, "I have something to say to you."  "Go ahead, Teacher," Simon replied. Then Jesus told him this story: "A man loaned money to two people--500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?" Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt."  "That's right," Jesus said.
