"To
what can I compare the people of this generation?" Jesus asked. "How
can I describe them? They are like children playing a game in the public
square. They complain to their friends, 'We played wedding songs, and
you didn't dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn't weep.' For
John the Baptist didn't spend his time eating bread or drinking wine,
and you say, 'He's possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man, on the other
hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, 'He's a glutton and a drunkard,
and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!' But wisdom is shown
to be right by the lives of those who follow it."

" 'and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!' "
Luke 15:1-2 Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people--even eating with them!
Luke 19:6-7 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. But the people were displeased. "He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner," they grumbled.
Matthew 9:10-11 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does you teacher eat with such scum?" (see also Luke 5:29-30)
"But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it."
Proverbs 9:9-12 Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous and they will learn even more. Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer. (see Proverbs chapters 8 and 9)
