Luke 7:24-27 Part 1 of 2

After John's disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. "What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind? Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces. Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, 'Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.' "

"What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see?"

Luke 1:80  John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.

Luke 3:2b  At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.

 

"Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?" 

Ephesians 4:14  Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won't be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

James 1:5-6  If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 

"Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet." 

Matthew 11:9  "Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet."

Luke 1:76  "And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord."

Matthew 14:5  Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.

Luke 20:5-6  They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, (John's baptism) he will ask why we didn't believe John. But if we say it was merely human, the people will stone us because they are convinced John was a prophet."

Matthew 21:26  "But if we say it was merely human, we'll be mobbed because the people believe John was a prophet."
