Psalm 140:1-3 Part 3 of 3

 

O LORD, rescue me from evil people.

    Protect me from those who are violent,

those who plot evil in their hearts

    and stir up trouble all day long.

Their tongues sting like a snake;

    the venom of a viper drips from their lips.

My enemies cannot speak a truthful word.

    their deepest desire is to destroy others.

Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.

Proverbs 26:28  

A lying tongue hates its victims,

    and flattering words cause ruin.  (see all Proverbs 26)

James 3:5-8  

In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes great speeches.

    But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

    People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.

Luke 3:7-8  

    When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, "You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee the coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones."

Psalm 58:3-5  

These wicked people are born sinners;

    even from birth they have lied and gone their own way.

They spit venom like deadly snakes;

    they are like cobras that refuse to listen,

ignoring the tunes of the snake charmers,

    no matter how skillfully they play.  (see all Psalm 58)
