Then
he told them a story: "A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine
crops. He said to himself, 'What should I do ? I don't have room for
all my crops.' Then he said, 'I know! I'll tear down my barns and build
bigger ones. Then I'll have room to store all my wheat and other goods.
And I'll sit back and say to myself, "My friend, you have enough stored
away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink and be merry!" '
But God said to him, 'You fool! You will die this very night. Then who
will get everything you worked for?' Yes, a person is a fool to store up
earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God."
"But God said to him, 'You fool!' "
Jeremiah 17:11 Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid, so are those who get their wealth by unjust means. At midlife they will lose their riches; in the end, they will become poor old fools.
Matthew 16:26 "And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?"
Luke 11:39-40 Then the Lord said to him, "You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy--full of greed and wickedness! Fools! Didn't God make the inside as well as the outside?"
" 'You will die this very night.' "
Job 27:8 (Job speaking) "For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life?"
" 'Then who will get everything you worked for?' "
Psalm 39:6 We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.
Psalm 49:10 Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.
Ecclesiastes 2:18 I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.
Ecclesiastes 2:21 Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn't worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.
