"This
is what God in his wisdom said about you: 'I will send prophets and
apostles to them, but they will kill some and persecute the others.' As a
result this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all
God's prophets from the creation of the world--from the murder of Abel
to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the
sanctuary. Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation."
"As a result this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all God's prophets from the creation of the world--"
Matthew 13:35a "As a result, you will be held responsible for the murder of all godly people of all time--..."
"from the murder of Abel"
Genesis 4:8 One day Cain suggested to his brother, "Let's go out into the fields." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him. (see verses 1-16)
Hebrews 11:4 It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel's offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.
1 John 3:12 We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous.
"to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary."
2 Chronicles 24:20-22 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, "This is what God says: Why do you disobey the LORD's commands and keep yourselves from prospering? You have abandoned the LORD, and now he has abandoned you!" Then the leaders plotted to kill Zechariah, and King Joash ordered that they stone him to death in the courtyard of the LORD's Temple. That is how King Joash repaid Jehoiada for his loyalty--by killing his son. Zechariah's last words were, "May the LORD see what they are doing and avenge my death!"
Matthew 23:35b "... from the murder of righteous Abel to the murder of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you killed in the Temple between the sanctuary and the altar."
"Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation."
Matthew 23:36-39 "I tell you the truth, this judgment will fall on this very generation. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me. And now, look, your house is abandoned and desolate. For I tell you this, you will never see me again until you say, 'Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD!' " (Psalm 118:26)
