Luke 3:19-20

John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother's wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.

John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee
Matthew 14:1-2  When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus, he said to his advisors, "This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles."
Mark 8:15  As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod."
Luke 3:1  It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene.
Luke 13:31  At that time some Pharisees said to him, "Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!"

for marrying Herodias, his brother's wife
Leviticus 18:16  "Do not have sexual relations with your brother's wife, for this would violate your brother."
Leviticus 20:21  "If a man marries his brother's wife, it is an act of impurity. He has violated his brother, and the guilty couple will remain childless."
Matthew 14:3-4  For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod's brother Philip). John had been telling Herod, "It is against God's law for you to marry her."
Mark 6:17-18  For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprison John as a favor to Herodias. She had been his brother Philip's wife, but Herod had married her. John had been telling Herod, "It is against God's law for you to marry your brother's wife."

So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
Matthew 14:5  Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.
Matthew 14:10  So John was beheaded in prison, ... [see Matthew 14:6-12; Mark 6:17-29]

Luke 3:17-18

"He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire." John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people.

"He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork."
Isaiah 30:24  The oxen and donkeys that till the ground will eat good grain, its chaff blown away by the wind.
Jeremiah 15:5-7  "Who will feel sorry for you, Jerusalem? Who will weep for you? Who will even bother to ask how you are? You have abandoned me and turned your back on me," says the LORD. "Therefore I will raise my fist to destroy you. I am tired of always giving you another chance. I will winnow you like grain at the gates of your cities and take away the children you hold dear. I will destroy my own people, because they refuse to change their evil ways."

"Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn"
Matthew 13:27-30  "The farmer's workers went to him and said, 'Sir, the field where you planted the good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?'  'An enemy has done this!' the farmer exclaimed. 'Should we pull out the weeds?' they asked. 'No,' he replied, 'you'll uproot the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.' "

"but burning the chaff with never-ending fire."
Malachi 4:1  The LORD of Heaven's Armies says, "The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed--roots, branches and all."
Matthew 5:22  "But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell."
James 3:5-6  In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.
Jude 7  And don't forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God's judgment.

Luke 3:15-16 Part 2 of 2

Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by saying, "I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of  his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."

"but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am"
John 1:15  John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.' "
John 1:30-31  "He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else."
Acts 19:4  Paul said, "John's baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus."

"--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals."
Mark 1:17  John announced: "Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals."
John 1:27  "Though his ministry follows mine, I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal."

"He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
Mark 1:8  "I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!"
Acts 1:5  "John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Acts 2:3  Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each one of them.
Acts 11:15-17  "As I began to speak," Peter continued, "the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning. Then I thought of the Lord's words when he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way?"

Luke 3:15-16 Part 1 of 2

Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by saying, "I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of  his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."

Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah.
Matthew 3:1-3  In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, "Repent of your sins and return to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, "He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the LORD's coming! Clear the road for him!' " (Isaiah 40:3)
John 1:19-20  This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants (Levites) from Jerusalem to ask John, "Who are you?" He came right out and said, "I am not the Messiah."
Acts 13:25  "As John was finishing his ministry he asked, 'Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon--and I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.' "

John answered their questions by saying, "I baptize you with water;"
Luke 3:3  Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
Mark 1:5  All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
John 1:26  John told them, "I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize."

Luke 3:10-14 Part 3 of 3

The crowds asked, "What should we do?" John replied, "If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry." Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, "Teacher, what should we do?" He replied, "Collect no more taxes than the government requires."  "What should we do?" asked some soldiers. John replied, "Don't extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay."

"What should we do?" asked some soldiers. John replied, "Don't extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay."
Exodus 23:1  "You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand."
Exodus 20:16  "You must not testify falsely against your neighbor." (also Deuteronomy 5:20)
Leviticus 19:11-12  "Do not steal. Do not deceive or cheat one another. Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD."
Proverbs 19:5  A false witness will not go unpunished, nor will a liar escape.
Matthew 19:17-19  "Why ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. But to answer your question--if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments."  "Which ones?" the man asked. And Jesus replied: "You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself."
Acts 6:11-12  So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying, "We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God." This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council. (the Sanhedrin)

Isaiah 58:7  "Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help."
Ezekiel 18:7  "He (a certain righteous man, see verse 5) is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given as security by poor debtors. He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy."
Ephesians 4:28  If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.
James 2:15-16  Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, "Goodbye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well"--but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
1 John 3:17  If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion--how can God's love be in that person?

Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, "Teacher what should we do?"
Luke 7:29  When they heard this, all the people--even the tax collectors--agreed that God's way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

He replied, "Collect no more taxes than the government requires."
Luke 19:2  There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.
Luke 19:8  Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, "I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!"

Acts 16:29-30  The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
Acts 22:10  "I (Paul) asked, 'What should I do, Lord?' And the Lord told me, 'Get up and go into Damascus and there you will be told everything you are to do.' "

Luke 3:7-9 Part 2 of 2

When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, "You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God's judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire."

"Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God."
Acts 26:20  "I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must repent of their sins and turn to God--and prove they have changed by the good things they do."

"Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' "
Luke 19:9  Jesus responded, "Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham." (see verses 1-8)
John 8:39  "Our father is Abraham!" they declared. "No," Jesus replied, "for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example."
Romans 4:16  So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham's. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.
Galatians 3:6-7  In the same way, "Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith." (Genesis 15:6) The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.

"Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire."
Matthew 3:10  "Even now the ax of God's judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire."
John 15:1-2  "I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more."
John 15:5-6  "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned."

Luke 3:7-9 Part 1 of 2

When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, "You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God's judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire."

"You brood of snakes!"
Psalm 140:1-3  O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips.
Matthew 12:34  "You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say."
Matthew 23:33  "Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell!"

"Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath?"
John 3:36  "And anyone who believes in God's Son has eternal life. anyone who doesn't obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God's angry judgment."
Romans 1:18-20  But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
Ephesians 5:6  Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins (see verses 3-4), for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.
1 Thessalonians 1:10  And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God's Son from heaven--Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.
1 Thessalonians 5:9  For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us.

Luke 3:4-6 Part 2 of 2

Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, "He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the LORD's coming! Clear the road for him! The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth. And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.' "

" 'The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth.' "
Isaiah 40:4b  "Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places."
Isaiah 42:16  "I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them."
Isaiah 45:1-3  This is what the LORD says to Cyrus, his anointed one, whose right hand he will empower. Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear. Their fortress gates will be opened, never to shut again. This is what the LORD says: "I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains. I will smash down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. And I will give you treasure hidden in the darkness--secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name."

" 'And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.' "
Luke 1:77  "You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins."
Isaiah 52:10  The LORD has demonstrated his holy power before the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth will see the victory of our God.
Psalm 98:2-3  The LORD has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation! He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel. The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
Isaiah 40:5  "Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken!"
Acts 28:28  "So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it."
Titus 2:11  For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.

" 'Prepare the way for the LORD's coming! Clear the road for him!' "
Luke 1:76  "And you my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord."
Isaiah 40:3b  "Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God!"

" 'The valleys will be filled,' "
Isaiah 40:4a  "Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills."
Isaiah 57:14  God says, "Rebuild the road! Clear away the rocks and stones so my people can return from captivity."

" 'and the mountains and hills made level.' "
Isaiah 49:11  "And I will make my mountains into level paths for them. The highways will be raised above the valleys."
Zechariah 4:6-7  Then he said to me, "This is what the LORD says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of Heaven's Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel's way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: 'May God bless it! May God bless it!' "

Matthew 3:11-12  "I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire."
Matthew 11:11-15  "I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is! And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it. For before John came, all the prophets and the law of Moses looked forward to this present time. And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!"

Luke 3:1-3 Part 3 of 4

It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests.
Matthew 26:3-4  At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.
John 18:13-14  First they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time. Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, "It's better that one man should die for the people."

At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.
Luke 1:80  John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.
Matthew 3:1  In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching.
Mark 1:1-4  This is the good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written: "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. (Malachi 3:1) He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the LORD's coming! Clear the road for him!' (Isaiah 40:3)" This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
John 1:6-7  God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.

Luke 3:1-3 Part 2 of 4

It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee;
Matthew 14:1-2  When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus, he said to his advisors, "This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles." (see verses 3-12)
Mark 8:15  As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod."
Luke 3:19-20  John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias his brother's wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
Luke 13:31  At that time some Pharisees said to him, "Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!"
Luke 23:7-8  When they said that he was, (a Galilean), Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod's jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
Acts 4:27-29  "In fact, this has happened (see Psalm 2:1-2) in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will. And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word."
Acts 12:1  About that time King Herod Agrippa (Herod Antipas' nephew and grandson of Herod the Great) began to persecute some believers in the church.

Luke 3:1-3 Part 1 of 4

It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor.
Luke 2:1  At that time (when John the Baptist was born) the Roman Emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire.

Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea;
Matthew 27:1-2  Very early in the morning the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death. Then they bound him, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Mark 15:1  Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law--the entire high council (the Sanhedrin)--met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Luke 13:1  About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple.
Acts 3:12-15  Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. "People of Israel," he said, "what is so surprising about this? (see verses 1-11) And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--the God of all our ancestors--who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, despite Pilate's decision to release him. You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact!"
1 Timothy 6:13-15  And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, that you obey this command (see verses 11-12) without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. For at just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

Luke 2:51-52

Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.

Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.
Luke 2:39  When Jesus' parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.

And his mother stored all these things in her heart.
Luke 2:18-19  All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.

Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.
Luke 2:40  There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was on him.
1 Samuel 2:26  Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with the LORD and with the people.
Proverbs 3:1-4  My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.
Luke 1:80  John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.

Luke 2:49-50

"But why did you need to search?" he asked. "Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they didn't understand what he meant.

"Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?"
John 2:16  Then going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, "Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father's house into a marketplace!"
John 14:2  "There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?"
Psalm 23:6  Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 27:4  The one thing I ask of the LORD--the thing I seek most--is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD's perfections and meditating in his Temple.
Psalm 69:9  Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
Psalm 84:10  A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.
Psalm 122:1  I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD."
Psalm 127:1  Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.
Isaiah 56:7  "I will bring them to my holy mountain of Jerusalem and will fill them with joy in my house of prayer. I will accept their burnt offerings and sacrifices, because my Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations."
Jeremiah 7:11  " 'Don't you yourselves admit that this Temple, which bears my name, has become a den of thieves? Surely I see all the evil going on there. I, the LORD have spoken!' "
Matthew 21:13  He said to them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves!" (also Mark 11:17)

But they didn't understand what he meant.
Luke 9:45  But they didn't know what he meant. It's significance was hidden from them, so they couldn't understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. (see verses 43-44)
John 12:16  His disciples didn't understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him. (see verses 12-14)

Luke 2:45-48

When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for him there. Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. His parents didn't know what to think. "Son," his mother said to him, "why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere."

Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers,
Matthew 26:55-56  Then Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day. But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures." At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Luke 5:17  One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord's healing power was strongly with Jesus.

All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
Matthew 7:28-29  When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority quite unlike their teachers of religious law. [also Mark 1:22]
Matthew 13:54  He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said, "Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?" [also Mark 6:2]
Mark 11:18  When the leading priests and teachers of religious law heard what Jesus had done, they began planning how to kill him. But they were afraid of him because the people were so amazed at his teaching.
Luke 4:31-32  Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day. There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
John 7:45-46  When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, "Why didn't you bring him in?"  "We have never heard anyone speak like this!" the guards responded.

Luke 2:41-44

Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual. After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn't miss him at first, because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn't show up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends.

Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.
Exodus 23:15  "First, celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. No one may appear before me without an offering."
Leviticus 23:5-8  "The LORD's Passover begins at sundown on the fourteenth day of the first month. On the next day, the fifteenth day of the month, you must begin celebrating the Festival of Unleavened Bread. This festival to the LORD continues for seven days, and during that time the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, all the people must stop their ordinary work and observe an official day for holy assembly. For seven days you must present special gifts to the LORD. On the seventh day the people must again stop all their ordinary work to observe an official day for holy assembly."
Deuteronomy 16:1-3  "In honor of the LORD your God, celebrate the Passover each year in the early spring, in the month of Abib, for that was the month in which the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night. Your Passover sacrifice may be from the flock or the herd, and it must be sacrificed to the LORD your God at the designated place of worship--the place he chooses for his name to be honored. Eat it with bread made without yeast. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, as when you escaped from Egypt in such a hurry. Eat this bread--the bread of suffering--so that as long as you live you will remember the day you departed from Egypt."

When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual.
John 2:13  It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.
John 11:55  It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.

Luke 2:39-40

When Jesus' parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was on him.

When Jesus' parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord,
Luke 2:23-24  The law of the Lord says, "If a woman's first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the LORD." (Exodus 13:2) So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lord--"either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." (Leviticus 12:8)

they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.
Matthew 2:23   So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: "He will be called a Nazarene."
Mark 1:9  One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.
Mark 6:1  Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.
Luke 4:16  When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
John 1:45-46  Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, "We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth."  "Nazareth!" exclaimed Nathanael, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"  "Come and see for yourself," Philip replied.

He was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was on him.
Luke 2:57  Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.
Luke 3:21-22  One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, "You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy."

Luke 2:36-38 Part 2 of 2

Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.

She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer.
Luke 5:33-35  One day some people said to Jesus, "John the Baptist's disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?" Jesus responded, "Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But some day the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast."
Acts 13:2-3  One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them." So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.
Acts 14:23  Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

2 Corinthians 11:27  I have worked long and hard, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.
1 Timothy 5:5  Now a true widow, a woman who is truly alone in this world, has placed her hope in God. She prays night and day, asking God for his help.

She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.
Isaiah 52:9  Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyful song, for the LORD has comforted his people. He has redeemed Jerusalem.
Luke 1:68  "Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people."
Luke 2:25  At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel.

Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple.
Exodus 15:20  Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced.
Judges 4:4  Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time.

Acts 2:17-18  " 'In the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. Acts 21:8-9  The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food. He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.

Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four.
1 Timothy 5:9  A widow who is put on the list for support must be a woman who is at least sixty years old and was faithful to her husband.

She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer.
Matthew 6:16-18  "And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."
