Everyone
was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know
whether John might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by
saying, "I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is
greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his
slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit and with fire."
"but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am"
John 1:15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.' "
John 1:30-31 "He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else."
Acts 19:4 Paul said, "John's baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus."
"--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals."
Mark 1:17 John announced: "Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals."
John 1:27 "Though his ministry follows mine, I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal."
"He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
Mark 1:8 "I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!"
Acts 1:5 "John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Acts 2:3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each one of them.
Acts 11:15-17 "As I began to speak," Peter continued, "the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning. Then I thought of the Lord's words when he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way?"
