When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, "You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God's judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire."
"You brood of snakes!"
Psalm 140:1-3 O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips.
Matthew 12:34 "You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say."
Matthew 23:33 "Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell!"
"Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath?"
John 3:36 "And anyone who believes in God's Son has eternal life. anyone who doesn't obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God's angry judgment."
Romans 1:18-20 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
Ephesians 5:6 Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins (see verses 3-4), for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.
1 Thessalonians 1:10 And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God's Son from heaven--Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us.
