It
was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor.
Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over
Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis;
Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high
priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah,
who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on
both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized
to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be
forgiven.
Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee;
Matthew 14:1-2 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus, he said to his advisors, "This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles." (see verses 3-12)
Mark 8:15 As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod."
Luke 3:19-20 John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias his brother's wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
Luke 13:31 At that time some Pharisees said to him, "Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!"
Luke 23:7-8 When they said that he was, (a Galilean), Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod's jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
Acts 4:27-29 "In fact, this has happened (see Psalm 2:1-2) in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will. And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word."
Acts 12:1 About that time King Herod Agrippa (Herod Antipas' nephew and grandson of Herod the Great) began to persecute some believers in the church.
