Luke 5:36-39 Part 1 of 2

Then Jesus gave them this illustration: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn't even match the old garment. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. 'The old is just fine,' they say."

Then Jesus gave them this illustration:
Matthew 13:3  He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one: "Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds."
Matthew 13:34-35  Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. This fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet: "I will speak to you in parables. I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world." (Psalm 78:2)
Mark 4:10-12  Later, when Jesus was alone with the twelve disciples and with the others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables meant. He replied, "You are permitted to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders, so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to me and be forgiven.' " (Isaiah 6:9-10)

"No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment."
Matthew 9:16  "Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before."

"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins."
Joshua 9:3-4  But when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they resorted to deception to save themselves. They sent ambassadors to Joshua, loading their donkeys with weathered saddle bags and old, patched wineskins. (see Joshua 9:5-27)
Joshua 9:13  "These wineskins were new when we filled them, but now they are old and split open. And our clothing and sandals are worn out from our very long journey."

"New wine must be stored in new wineskins."
Mark 2:22  "And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins."
