One
Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his
disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands,
and ate the grain. But some Pharisees said, "Why are you breaking the
law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?" Jesus replied, "Haven't you
read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were
hungry? He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the
sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some
to his companions." And Jesus added, "The Son of Man is Lord, even over
the Sabbath."
"He also gave some to his companions."
1 Samuel 21:4-6 "We don't have any regular bread," the priest replied. "But there is the holy bread, which you can have if your young men have not slept with any women recently." "Don't worry," David replied. "I never allow my men to be with women when they are on a campaign. And since they stay clean even on ordinary trips, how much more on this one!" Since there was no other food available, the priest gave him the holy bread--the Bread of the Presence that was placed before the LORD in the Tabernacle. It had just been replaced that day with fresh bread.
Matthew 12:4 "He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat."
Mark 2:26 "He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions."
And Jesus added, "The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath."
Matthew 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath."
Mark 2:27-28 Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!"
Ezekiel 20:19-20 " 'I am the LORD your God,' I told them. 'Follow my decrees, pay attention to my regulations, and keep my Sabbath days holy, for they are a sign to remind you that I am the LORD your God.' "
