On
another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the
synagogue while Jesus was teaching. The teachers of religious law and
the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed this man's hand, they
planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew their
thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come and stand in
front of everyone." So the man came forward. Then Jesus said to the
critics, "I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on
the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life
or to destroy it?" He looked around at them one by one and then said to
the man, "Hold out your hand." So the man held out his hand, and it was
restored! At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to
discuss what to do with him.
If he healed this man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
Matthew 12:10b The Pharisees asked Jesus, "Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?" (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)
Mark 3:2b If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
Mark 12:13 Later the leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested.
Luke 11:53-54 As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.
Luke 20:20 Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.
John 8:6-8 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, "All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!" Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
