When
he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual
to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The
scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll
and found the place where this was written: "The Spirit of the LORD is
upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will
see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the
LORD's favor has come." He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the
attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him
intently. Then he began to speak to them. "The Scripture you've just
heard has been fulfilled this very day!"
"that the oppressed will be set free,"
Isaiah 58:6 "No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people."
"and that the time of the LORD's favor has come."
Leviticus 25:10 "Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to you own clan."
Psalm 102:19-20 Tell them the LORD looked down from his heavenly sanctuary. He looked down to earth from heaven to hear the groans of the prisoners, to release those condemned to die.
Psalm 103:6 The LORD gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly.
Isaiah 49:8-9 This is what the LORD says: "At just the right time, I will respond to you. On the day of salvation I will help you. I will protect you and give you to the people as my covenant with them. Through you I will reestablish the land of Israel and assign it to its own people again. I will say to the prisoners, 'Come out in freedom,' and to those in darkness, 'Come into the light.' They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare."
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 As God's partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God's kindness and then ignore it. For God says, "At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you." Indeed, the "right time" is now. Today is the day of salvation.
