James 5:19-20 Part 2 of 2

My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death
Proverbs 14:12  There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death. (also Proverbs 16:25)
Romans 8:12-13  Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. (see all chapter 8)
Hebrews 3:12-13  Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters, make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still "today," so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. (see all chapter 3)

and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
Psalm 130:3-4  LORD, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. (see all Psalm 130)
Luke 24:47-48  "It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: 'There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.' You are witnesses of all these things." (see verses 44-53)
Acts 26:17-18  " 'And I (Jesus) will rescue you (Saul/Paul) from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God's people, who are set apart by faith in me.' " (see all chapter 26)
1 Peter 4:8  Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. (see all chapter 4)

James 5:19-20 Part 1 of 2

My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth

John 17:15-17  "I'm not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth." (see all chapter 17)
1 Timothy 1:6  But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. (see verses 3-11, 18-20)

2 Peter 2:15-16  They wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong. But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice. (see all chapter 2; also Numbers 22-24)

and is brought back,
Matthew 18:15  "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back." (see verses 15-20)
Luke 17:3  "So watch yourselves! If another believer sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive." (see verses 1-6)
Galatians 6:1  Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. (see verses 1-5)

James 5:17-18

Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.

Elijah was as human as we are,
Acts 14:15  "Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings--just like you! We have come to bring you the Good News that you should turn from these worthless things and turn to the living God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them." (see verses 8-20)

and yet, when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years!
1 Kings 17:1  Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, "As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel lives--the God I serve--there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!" (see all chapter 17)
Luke 4:25-26  "Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner--a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon." (see 1 Kings 17:7-24)

Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
1 Kings 18:1-2  Later on, in the third year of the drought, the LORD said to Elijah, "Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!" So Elijah went to appear before Ahab. Meanwhile the famine had become very severe in Samaria. (see verses 1-40)
1 Kings 18:44-45  Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, "I saw a little cloud about the size of a man's hand rising from the sea." Then Elijah shouted, "Hurry to Ahab and tell him, 'Climb into your chariot and go back home. If you don't hurry, the rain will stop you!' " And soon the sky was black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm, and Ahab left quickly for Jezreel. (see verses 41-46)

James 5:16

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Proverbs 15:29  The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous.
Job 42:8  "So take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer on your behalf. I will not treat you as you deserve, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has." (see verses 7-17)
1 Kings 17:21-22  And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, please let this child's life return to him." The LORD heard Elijah's prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he revived! (see verses 17-24)

James 5:14-15

Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

James 5:12

But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

Numbers 30:1-2  Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, "This is what the LORD has commanded: A man who makes a vow to the LORD or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do." (see all chapter 30)
Matthew 5:33-37  "You have also heard that our ancestors were told, 'You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.' (Numbers 30:2) But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, 'By heaven!' because heaven is God's throne. And do not say, 'By the earth!' because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the Great King. Don't even say, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Anything beyond this is from the evil one."

James 5:11

We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.

Matthew 5:10  "God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."
Job 1:21-22  He said, "I came naked from my mother's womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!" In all this, Job did not sin by blaming God. (see verses 6-22)
Job 2:10  But Job replied, "You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?" So in all this, Job said nothing wrong. (see verses 1-10)
Romans 5:3  We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us build endurance. (see verses 1-11)
Hebrews 10:36  Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. (see verses 19-39)
Hebrews 12:1  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith (chapter 11), let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. (see verses 1-13)
James 1:3-4  For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. (see verses 2-18)
Job 42:10  When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before! (see verses 7-16)
Exodus 34:6  The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, "Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness." (see verses 1-28)
Numbers 14:17-18  "Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed. For you said, 'The LORD is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected--even children in the third and fourth generations.' " (see all chapter 14)
Psalm 103:8  The LORD is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. (see all Psalm 103)

James 5:10

For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

2 Chronicles 36:15-16  The LORD, the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent his prophets to warn them, for he had compassion on his people and his Temple. But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the LORD's anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done. (se verses 11-21)
Matthew 5:11-12  "God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way."
Matthew 23:34  "Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law. But you will kill some by crucifixion, and you flog others with whips in your synagogues, chasing them from city to city." (see all chapter 23)
Matthew 23:37  "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me."
Acts 7:52  "Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One--the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered." (see all chapter 7)
1 Thessalonians 2:15-16  For some of the Jews killed the prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted us, too. They fail to please God and work against all humanity as they try to keep us from preaching the Good News of salvation to the Gentiles. By doing this they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger of God has caught up with them at last. (see all chapter 2)
Hebrews 11:32-34  How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets. By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight. (see verses 32-38, also all chapter 11)

James 5:9

Don't grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look--the Judge is standing at the door!

Matthew 7:1-2  "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged." (see verses 1-6)
James 4:11  Don't speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law, not judge whether it applies to you. (see verses 1-12)
Psalm 94:2  Arise, O judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. (see verses 1-15)
1 Corinthians 4:5  So don't make judgments about anyone ahead of time--before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. (see all chapter 4)
James 4:12  God alone, who gave the law is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
1 Peter 4:5  But remember that they will have to face God, who will judge everyone, both the living and the dead. (see verses 4-6)
Revelation 22:12-13  "Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
Matthew 24:33  In the same way (verse 32), when you see these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door." (see all chapter 24; also Mark 13)

James 5:8

You, too, must be patient. Take courage for the coming of the Lord is near.

Romans 13:11-12  This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. (see verses 8-14)
Philippians 4:5  Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. (see verses 4-9)

1 Thessalonians 5:4-6  But you aren't in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won't be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don't belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clear-headed. (see 4:13 - 5:22)

1 John 2:18  Dear children, the last hour is here. You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the last hour has come. (see verses 18-27)
Revelation 1:7  Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven. And everyone will see him--even those who pierced him. And all the nations of the world will mourn for him. Yes! Amen! (see verses 1-8)
Revelation 22:10  Then he instructed me, "Do not seal up the prophetic words in this book, for the time is near." (see verses 7-21; also Daniel 12:4, 9-10)

James 5:7

Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. Then we will be with the Lord forever. (see verses 13-18)
1 Peter 1:13  So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. (see all chapter 1)

Galatians 6:9  So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. (see verses 7-10)

They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.
Deuteronomy 11:13-14  "If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul, then he will send the rains in their proper seasons--the early and late rains--so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil." (see verses 8-32)

James 5:4-6

For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the LORD of Heaven's Armies. You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you.

You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.

Acts 3:13-14  "For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--the God of all our ancestors--who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. James 5:1-3 Part 2 of 2

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. Your gold and silver have become worthless. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This treasure you have accumulated will stand as evidence against you on the day of judgment.

Your gold and silver have become worthless. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This treasure you have accumulated will stand as evidence against you on the day of judgment.
James 5:7-8  Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near. (see verses 7-12)
Luke 12:21  "Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God." (see verses 13-21)

And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can crossover to us from there!' " (see verses 19-31)
Romans 2:5-6  But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. (see verses 1-16)

James 5:1-3 Part 1 of 2

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. Your gold and silver have become worthless. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This treasure you have accumulated will stand as evidence against you on the day of judgment.

Look here, you rich people:
Luke 6:24  "What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now." (see verses 24-26)
1 Timothy 6:9  But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. (see verses 3-10)
James 2:2-4  For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, "You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor"--well, doesn't this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? (see verses 1-13)
Proverbs 11:28  Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.
Amos 6:1  What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem, and you who feel secure in Samaria! You are famous and popular in Israel, and people go to you for help. (see all chapter 6)

James 4:15-17

What you ought to say is, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that." Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

What you ought to say is, "If the Lord wants us to, we live and do this or that."

Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
1 Corinthians 5:6  Your boasting about this is terrible. Don't you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? (see all chapter 5)

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
Luke 12:47-48  "And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn't prepared and doesn't carry out those instructions, will be severely punished. But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required." (see verses 35-48)
John 9:41  "If you were blind, you wouldn't be guilty," Jesus replied. "But you remain guilty because you claim you can see." (see verses 35-41)
2 Peter 2:21  It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. (see all chapter 2)

James 4:13-14

Look here, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit." How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog--it's here a little while, then it's gone.

And I'll sit back and say to myself, "My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!" ' But God said to him, 'You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?' " (see verses 13-21)

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog--it's here a little while, then it's gone.

James 4:11-12 Part 2 of 2

Don't speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?

But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.
James 1:22  But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise you are only fooling yourselves. (see verses 22-25)

God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge.

1 Corinthians 4:5  So don't make judgments about anyone ahead of time--before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. (see verses 1-5)
1 Peter 4:5  But remember that they will have to face God, who will judge everyone, both the living and the dead. (see verses 4-6)

He alone has the power to save or to destroy.
Matthew 10:28  "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell." (see verses 24-42)

So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
1 Corinthians 4:7  For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn't given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift? (see verses 6-16)

Don't speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law.

Luke 6:37  "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others and you will be forgiven." (see verses 37-42)
Romans 2:1  You may think you can condemn such people (Romans 1), but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. (see verses 1-16)
James 2:8-9  Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: "Love  your neighbor as yourself." But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.
