Luke 16:13-15 Part 2 of 3

"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him. Then he said to them, "You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God."

Then he said to them, "You like to appear righteous in public,"
Luke 10:29  The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" (see verses 25-37)
Matthew 6:1-2  "Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don't do as the hypocrites do--blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get."
Matthew 23:5-7  "Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi.' " (see also Luke 11:43 and 20:46-47)

"but God knows your hearts."
1 Samuel 16:7  But the LORD said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him (Eliab, David's oldest brother). The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
Psalm 139:1-2  O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. (see all of Psalm 139)
Proverbs 21:2  People may be right in their own eyes, but the LORD examines their heart.
Jeremiah 17:9-10  "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve."
